This is the Calamity Gundam done right.
Bandai took a design whose 2021 no-grade version was praised for color separation but dinged for a floppy waist and hollow legs, and quietly fixed the parts that mattered most: new shoulder, wrist, shin, and backpack joints. The result is a 1/100 kit that finally holds the wide melee stances this suit is built for. It is not a flashy release, it is a corrective one, and I respect that more than a lot of showier P-Bandai exclusives.
Best for: SEED Astray fans and 1/100 builders who want the Calamity line's oddball melee variant without fighting the frame
What it is
The Sword Calamity swaps the base Calamity's cannon-heavy loadout for a close-combat kit built around the Schwert Gewehr anti-ship sword, forearm-mounted Panzer Eisen rocket anchors, shoulder Midas Messer beam boomerangs, and shin-housed Armor Schneider knives. It is essentially a running redesign of the original Calamity Gundam chassis with newly molded shoulder, wrist, shin, and backpack joint parts, which is exactly where the earlier kit needed help. Building it feels like meeting a familiar mobile suit that finally got its footing. The orange and red color scheme reads clean out of the runners with real molded color rather than paint tricks, and the sword alone is a centerpiece prop worth the shelf space.
The catch
This is still a P-Bandai exclusive at roughly 6,500 yen before markup and import shipping, so it costs more and takes longer to get than a shelf HG or MG. The base Calamity design it is built from has a known weak point at the hip, since the unique hip mechanism runs loose even on kits with tightened shoulders and wrists, and the leg units stay mostly hollow inside rather than getting a full inner frame. The giant sword and shoulder boomerangs also add real weight up top, so wrist and elbow joints are doing more work than on a standard 1/100 and can sag over time if you leave it posed with the sword raised.
Who it's for
Builders who already like the Cosmic Era spinoff suits, or who wanted the original Calamity Gundam but wished it held a pose, should go after this one specifically for the retooled joints. It also rewards anyone who wants a genuinely different silhouette on the shelf, since nothing else in a typical Gundam lineup looks quite like this orange melee brawler with a sword bigger than its torso. Skip it if you only want mainline protagonist units or if P-Bandai pricing and import wait times are a dealbreaker, since this was never a mass retail release and secondhand prices reflect that.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Runner cleanup is straightforward for a 1/100 kit, and the newly molded joint parts click together with more confidence than builders reported on the earlier no-grade Calamity. The torso and arm assembly benefits most from the retool, since the shoulder and wrist revisions are exactly what let this kit hold a raised-sword pose without drifting. The hip is the one spot where the improvements do not fully carry over, since the mechanism itself is unchanged and stays looser than the rest of the frame.
Color separation is the standout here: the orange, red, and grey come molded in rather than relying on stickers, aside from eyes, head sensors, and the bazooka-style camera lens. Articulation is generous for the arms and the back-mounted cannons and boomerangs, which swing through a wide range for dynamic sword poses. Part count and accessory density are high for the price band, with two rocket anchors, two beam boomerangs, two shin knives, and the oversized sword all included.
