The verdict

This is the AGE-II Magnum kit getting a proper glow-up, and it mostly earns the upgrade.

Bandai took a mold they already knew worked and reworked the colors, added the F Funnels and Sigmaxiss funnel, and gave it a Phoenix flight mode, and the unarmored frame still poses beautifully underneath all of it. It is not a clean win top to bottom, the new heel unit and the funnel hardware both fight you a little, but as an HG that wants to look busy and dramatic on a shelf, it delivers.

Best for: Build Divers fans and funnel-gimmick lovers who already own or don't mind the base AGE-II Magnum

The full review

What it is

This kit is Kujo Kyoya's upgraded AGE-II Magnum from Build Divers, built on the same excellent frame as the original AGE-II Magnum release but reworked with a new grey and white color split, F Funnels on the shoulders, a Sigmaxiss funnel, and the Hyper DODS Rifle Magnum alongside the full original loadout (DODS rifle, beam sabers, Shiguru shield, display base). I went in expecting a simple recolor and came out impressed that the arms, legs, and neck all still move as freely as the kit this is based on. The Phoenix flight mode transformation is the kind of extra that could have felt like a gimmick but actually changes how the kit reads on the shelf.

The catch

The new heel unit that makes the Phoenix mode work looks fantastic in flight poses but genuinely hurts standing stability, you will be reaching for a stand more than you would with the plain Magnum. The shoulder-mounted F Funnels also crowd the arms during dynamic posing, and the Shiguru shield is big enough that it can clip into the backpack wings if you are not careful with the angle. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it is a step down in ease of posing compared to the kit it is built from, and it is worth knowing before you commit to a big battle pose.

Who it's for

Grab this one if you are already invested in Build Divers or you just want a more chaotic, funnel-heavy version of the AGE-II Magnum silhouette, this kit rewards people who like fiddling with loadouts and alternate modes. If you already own the base AGE-II Magnum and mainly want the vanilla color scheme, you can skip the double dip. If rock-solid standing stability without a display base matters more to you than flight-pose drama, this is not the kit that prioritizes that.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Builders across multiple reviews describe assembly as straightforward with no finicky steps, the kit shares roughly 13 runners' worth of parts with the earlier AGE-II Magnum release, just recast in grey instead of navy, so anyone who has built the original will find this one familiar in the hand.

The color separation lands well for an HG, with the grey and white split doing a lot of work without heavy sticker reliance. The real standout is how much of the base kit's articulation survives the added hardware, the arms and legs still hit good extension even with the F Funnels mounted, and the accessory count (multiple funnels, two rifle variants, sabers, shield, stand) is generous for the price point of an HG.

Lore & trivia

  • 01This kit depicts Kujo Kyoya's upgraded AGE-II Magnum as it appears in Gundam Build Divers, built around the in-fiction GBN game mechanic of customizing existing Gunpla designs with new parts.
  • 02The kit reuses the majority of the runner layout from the standalone HGBD Gundam AGE-II Magnum released earlier in 2018, recolored from navy to grey for the SV version.
  • 03The SV version adds a Phoenix flight mode transformation along with the F Funnel and Sigmaxiss funnel gimmicks not present on the base AGE-II Magnum kit.
