The verdict

I want to be upfront about what this actually is before I get into how good it is: the Amazing Lev A is not a standalone mobile suit, it is an accessory and weapons expansion for the HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe.

Once I accepted that framing, I had a good time with it. The three-in-one main weapon and the shield that folds out into a bird-shaped booster are clever pieces of engineering for something this small and this cheap. It is not a kit you buy on its own merits, it is a kit you buy because you already love the Vrabe and want to push it further.

Best for: Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe owners who want more firepower and a flashier silhouette, not first-time builders looking for a complete robot

The full review

What it is

The Amazing Lev A showed up bundled into Gundam Build Fighters Ace magazine in early 2015 for a genuinely low price, and it reads exactly like a magazine extra: a small runner or two of weapons and armor built to snap onto an existing Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe. The centerpiece is a weapon that reconfigures between a beam spear, a beam gatling gun, and a beam rifle, plus a shield that unfolds into the bird-shaped Vrabe booster the suit is named for. Clipping the gatling together and swapping it between modes was the most fun part of the build for me. It is a small, focused project, and it delivers a real sense of accomplishment for how little plastic is actually in the box.

The catch

This is the honest part: without a Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe already on your shelf, this kit does nothing. It is not a complete figure, it has no body, no head, no legs, it is armor and weapons only, so treat it as a paid expansion pack rather than a kit in its own right. Because it started life as a magazine bonus, original copies can be harder to track down than a standard retail release, and pricing varies a lot depending on where you find it. The parts count is small, which is fine for what it is, but if you go in expecting a full standalone build you will be disappointed inside of twenty minutes.

Who it's for

If you already have the HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe and liked it, this is a cheap, quick way to make it feel new again, and the transforming weapon is a satisfying little engineering puzzle on its own. If you do not own the base kit, skip this entirely, there is nothing here for you and you will be buying plastic that cannot stand on its own. I would also point Build Fighters completionists toward it since the Amazing A&D form is a specific, recognizable look from the show, not just a generic weapon pack.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

There is not much to clean up here, gate placement on the small weapon and shield runners is straightforward and cleanup is fast even for a first-timer. The parts snap together with the same confidence as the rest of the HGBF line, nothing loose or fiddly in the joints connecting the new armor to the Vrabe's existing frame.

The standout is the weapon's three configurations. Swinging it from beam spear to gatling to rifle without extra parts swaps is the kind of small mechanical trick that makes an accessory set worth building instead of just displaying in the bag. The shield-to-booster fold gives the finished Amazing A&D form real presence on the shelf, closer in silhouette to the anime designs than the plain Vrabe alone.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Amazing Lev A was bundled into Gundam Build Fighters Ace magazine in early 2015 rather than sold as a standalone retail kit.
  • 02It is a weapon and armor expansion for the HGBF 1/144 Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe, not a complete mobile suit kit on its own.
  • 03Combined with its Vrabe base, it recreates the Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe Amazing A&D, the upgraded custom suit built and piloted by Tatsuya Yuuki in Gundam Build Fighters Amazing and Gundam Build Fighters Document.
  • 04The included shield can be folded out into the bird-shaped booster pack that gives the Vrabe its name.
