I like this one for exactly what it is and not a bit more than that.
It is not a mobile suit, it is a support/weapon expansion for the HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe, giving it a railgun, a beam gatling cannon, and a shield booster that doubles as a flight unit. On its own in the tray it looks sparse, but clipped onto the Vrabe it genuinely transforms the silhouette into the Amazing A&D loadout from Build Fighters Amazing. Judge it as an accessory set and it earns its keep.
Best for: Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe owners who want the Amazing A&D loadout and don't mind hunting down a magazine exclusive
What it is
Amazing Lev D was the Dengeki Hobby April 2015 magazine bundle, a companion to the Gundam Ace exclusive Amazing Lev A, and together they gear up the HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe into the armament configuration Tatsuya Yuuki runs in Gundam Build Fighters Amazing. What you actually get is a beam gatling cannon, a railgun, and a shield/booster unit that reads as a bird in flight mode and folds down into a backpack brick in standby mode. There is no inner frame here and no torso to assemble, it is a weapons and armor add-on kit, and once it is clipped onto the base Vrabe it does exactly what it promises: bulks up the silhouette and hands you two very different ranged weapon options instead of the stock beam rifle alone.
The catch
The obvious catch is that this is not a standalone mobile suit, so you need the base HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe (or a compatible Hi-nu/Nu frame) before Amazing Lev D does anything for you. It was also a magazine-exclusive release bundled into Dengeki Hobby rather than sold on shelves, so tracking down a complete, unpunched copy years later takes some secondhand hunting and you will pay well over the original 1,470 yen bundle price. The shield/booster's dual role as a bird-mode flight unit and a static backpack means the transformation joints are doing a lot of work for a small number of parts, so don't expect it to lock as solidly as a dedicated MG backpack.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already own the Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe and want to build the Amazing A&D version that actually appeared on screen, or if you collect Gundam Build Fighters Amazing gear and like the idea of a railgun and gatling cannon option beyond the stock rifle. Skip it if you are new to the hobby or looking for a first kit, this only makes sense as an add-on and it will not build into anything by itself. It's also a pass if you are scale-purist about MSRP, since magazine exclusives carry an aftermarket premium that a lot of builders will not think is worth it for an accessory set.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
There's no frame or torso to assemble, so the build is short: mostly weapon barrels, the gatling drum, and the shield/booster's folding sections. Gate placement on the weapon parts is typical HG-era Bandai, small and easy to miss with a hobby knife on the thin cannon barrels, so take it slow there rather than on the bulkier shield pieces.
The standout piece of engineering is the shield/booster itself, it holds a bird-in-flight silhouette on the back of the Vrabe and then folds down into a compact backpack brick for standard robot mode, which is a lot of function packed into what is essentially one accessory. Color separation on the railgun and gatling cannon is handled mostly in molded plastic rather than stickers, which keeps the weapons looking clean without extra painting.
Lore & trivia
- 01Amazing Lev D was bundled exclusively with the April 2015 issue of Dengeki Hobby Magazine, released February 26, 2015, while its companion piece Amazing Lev A shipped with Gundam Ace magazine around the same window.
- 02Equipping both Lev A and Lev D onto the HGBF Hi-nu Gundam Vrabe recreates the RX-93-v2VA Hi-v Gundam Vrabe Amazing A&D, the upgraded suit piloted by Tatsuya Yuuki in Gundam Build Fighters Amazing and Gundam Build Fighters Document.
- 03The shield/booster unit in the set is designed to double as a bird-shaped flight pack, referencing the Vrabe name (a play on the Czech word for sparrow, vrabec).
