This is one of the best HG experiences on the market wearing a bulkier price tag because of everything Bandai crammed into the box.
The base Moon Gundam sculpt was already praised as a standout HGUC, and this Long Rifle Equipped version adds a second signature weapon, a full psycho plate array, and an action base instead of just repackaging the same kit in a different color. It is not perfect, the no-polycap joints and top-heavy backpack are real tradeoffs, but the sheer amount of kit you get for an HG makes the caveats easy to accept.
Best for: UC completionists and Sazabi fans who want the design's blocky, funnel-armed predecessor with two rifles instead of one
What it is
The Moon Gundam is the Varguil test type wearing a Gundam-style head and a tricolor repaint, and it reads exactly like that lineage on the runner, a leaner, more mechanical cousin of the Sazabi with the same brutalist confidence. This Long Rifle Equipped version was a Gundam Base exclusive released in June 2023, and it doubles down on the original kit's strength: real inner-frame structure at the knees with a distinctive double-hinge separation, interchangeable eye lenses for a later LED swap, and a beam rifle that reviewers called some of the cleanest tooling in the line. Building it feels less like snapping together an entry kit and more like assembling a small MG, which is exactly what makes it memorable.
The catch
There are no polycaps anywhere in this kit, every joint is plastic on plastic, which feels tight and precise fresh out of the box but is worth knowing about for long-term wear since there is nothing to swap out later. The eight psycho plates and their support arm add real weight to the backpack, and several builders needed the included action base to keep dramatic poses from tipping backward. A few reviewers also weren't sold on how the funnel-style plate racks look mounted, calling them a little silly next to the rest of the design. And because this was a Gundam Base exclusive, secondhand pricing runs well above a typical HG.
Who it's for
Grab this one if you already like the Sazabi's silhouette and want the U.C. story that leads into it, or if you want an HG that actually challenges you with inner-frame assembly instead of simple block construction. The two-rifle, eight-plate loadout also makes it a strong pick for anyone building a small Neo Zeon or Londo Bell display shelf. Skip it if you specifically want the cheapest, simplest HG experience or you're not willing to hunt down a secondary-market copy at exclusive-release pricing, since this was never a mainline retail kit.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Gate placement follows typical HGUC practice and cleans up without much fuss, but there's more sprue here than a usual HG thanks to the doubled-up weapon and plate parts, so budget extra build time. The leg assembly is the highlight, the inner frame pieces click together with real mechanical logic and the double-hinge knee is unusually satisfying for the price point.
Articulation holds up well at the hips and knees thanks to that inner frame, and the shoulders handle the psycho plate backpack better than expected once everything clicks into place. Color separation is strong for molded plastic with minimal sticker reliance, and having both the beam rifle and the long rifle, plus a tomahawk and butterfly edges, gives it accessory variety most HG kits don't come close to.
Lore & trivia

- 03This Long Rifle Equipped version was a Gundam Base exclusive that went on sale June 10, 2023, priced at 3,740 yen.
