This is the same excellent HGUC R-Jarja engineering underneath a Premium Bandai recolor, and that's exactly the point.
If you already know the 2019 retail R-Jarja is one of the more underrated HGUC frames from that era, this version gives you the same double-jointed neck, rotating shoulder shields, and heat-bayonet rifle in a Twilight AXIS color scheme with molded plastic instead of paint. The catch is you're paying a premium exclusive price for a palette swap, not new tooling.
Best for: HGUC completionists and Twilight AXIS fans who want the R-Jarja's Neo Zeon knight look without repainting it
What it is
The R-Jarja has always read as a Gyan descendant built for a duelist, and this Twilight AXIS release leans into that with a white, purple, and pink color split molded straight into the plastic rather than relying on paint or stickers for the accent colors. Building it, the frame is unmistakably the same well-regarded HGUC #220 tooling, so the neck ball joint gives real head tilt and swivel, the elbows and knees both bend well past 90 degrees, and the skirt armor pivots out of the way instead of blocking the hip. The shoulder shields rotate a full 180 degrees to snap from rear guard to frontal cover, and each one hides three molded missile launchers you'd otherwise expect to be flat panel lines.
The catch
This is a Premium Bandai exclusive, which means exclusive pricing for what is functionally the same kit as the standard retail HGUC R-Jarja with a different color palette. Builders of the base kit have flagged loose shoulder ball joints and wrists after repeated posing, and nothing about the retool changes that frame, so don't expect the joint tension to be sturdier just because the box art changed. The accessory loadout is identical to the standard release too (beam rifle with heat bayonet and one beam saber), so if you already own the retail version there's no new gear here, only new plastic colors.
Who it's for
Buy this if you're chasing the Twilight AXIS look specifically, if pre-molded color separation on a Neo Zeon knight suit appeals to you more than painting one yourself, or if you collect HGUC exclusives and this is a gap in the line. Skip it if you already built the standard retail R-Jarja and are hoping for new parts, new weapons, or tighter joints, because you won't find any of that here. It's also a fine suit to start with if you've never built an R-Jarja at all and don't mind paying exclusive pricing to get the color scheme you actually want on the shelf.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The runners share tooling with the HGBF R-Gyagya lineage plus dedicated new parts for this suit, and assembly feels typical of a well-designed late-2010s HGUC: gates are placed on non-visible edges, panel lines are crisp out of the box, and the skirt armor's pivot keeps hip movement from binding against the front and side plates.
Articulation is the standout here. The neck is a true double ball-joint that tilts and swivels independent of the torso, elbows and knees both clear 135 degrees of bend, and the rotating shoulder shields double as both defense and a hidden missile battery, which is a clever bit of design for a suit this size and price point.
Lore & trivia
- 01The R-Jarja was built by refurbishing a suit that carried over the design philosophy of the One Year War-era YMS-15 Gyan, which is why its silhouette and close-combat focus echo that older Zeon unit.
- 02It first appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ piloted by ace Neo Zeon pilot Chara Soon during the First Neo Zeon War of UC 0088, flown against the Argama and its crew.
- 03Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS, the light novel and ONA this version is themed after, put a separate R-Jarja unit in the hands of pilot Danton Hyleg.
- 04This Twilight AXIS Ver. kit reuses the HGUC AMX-104 R-Jarja tooling with a molded white, purple, and pink colorway plus a two-step sliding gimmick for the variable shield, and it released in July 2020 through Premium Bandai.
