The verdict

This is one of the best cheap HG kits Bandai has ever put out, and I say that after building plenty of kits that cost three times as much.

The inner frame under the armor was a genuine first for an HG at this price, and it shows in how confidently this thing holds a pose. It is not the biggest or the most detailed kit on my shelf, but it might be the one I reach for most when I just want to mess around with a mobile suit.

Best for: Beginners and budget builders who want real inner-frame articulation without paying MG money

The full review

What it is

Barbatos is the first Gundam of the Iron-Blooded Orphans line, and this HG version was priced low (around 1000 yen at Japanese retail) while still packing a real inner frame, something HG kits at that price simply did not do before this. Snapping the frame together and then dressing it in the chunky, battle-worn armor plates felt like getting two kits in one. The double-jointed arms and legs, the swiveling ankles, and the mid-foot bend mean it drops into aggressive combat poses almost by accident. It comes with the mace and the sword, and swapping between them changes the whole read of the figure.

The catch

The detailing leans hard on a big foil sticker sheet, and some of those stickers are fiddly to place cleanly, especially around the smaller panel lines. Bandai also puts an oversized nub mark right on the edge of the sword blade, which is an easy spot to leave a visible scar if you rush the cleanup with clippers instead of a proper cutter. The ball joints are a little grabby too. Push too hard rotating the waist or shoulders and you can pop a joint out, which is a known quirk across the early IBO HG line, not just this kit.

Who it's for

Buy this if you are new to the hobby and want a kit that rewards good gate cleanup and sticker patience with a genuinely poseable, good-looking result for not much money. It is also a smart pickup if you are building toward the later Barbatos forms (Lupus, Lupus Rex) since the base frame and this kit's parts feed directly into that upgrade path. Skip it if you want maximum molded-color detail with zero stickers, or if you are specifically after a display piece rather than something built to be posed hard and often.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The build itself is simple and fast, six runners and a single polycap set, which makes it a good first kit or a palate cleanser between bigger projects. Gate cleanup is mostly painless except for that one troublesome nub on the sword, where a flush cutter and a light hand matter. The sticker sheet takes the longest of any step here, and getting the smaller decals aligned on the torso and shins takes real patience.

Where it earns its reputation is the frame. The inner skeleton gives the arms a genuine 180-degree elbow bend, the legs double-jointed range that most 1/144 kits at this price never touch, and the ankles and toes articulate enough to hold dynamic single-leg poses without a stand. Color separation is better than expected too, with blue, red, yellow, pink, and dark grey all showing up in molded plastic rather than paint alone, so even before stickers it reads as a real Gundam and not a grey blob.

Lore & trivia

  • 01Barbatos is one of 72 original Gundam-type mobile suit frames built roughly 300 years before the story with dual Ahab Reactors, technology so demanding that very few frames could run it
  • 02The suit was recovered by Chryse Guard Security missing its original cockpit, and its Ahab Reactors were kept running as a power source before it was rebuilt into a functioning mobile suit again
  • 03Pilot Mikazuki Augus received three Alaya-Vijnana spinal implants, more than any other character shown surviving the procedure, which is why he could interface with Barbatos at a level nobody else in his unit could match
  • 04This HG was the first high grade kit at its price point to include a full inner frame, a design choice that shaped the entire HGIBO line that followed it
