I like this kit for exactly what it is: a $5 box of weapon runners that makes your existing Zeon kits look armed for war.
It is not a mobile suit and I judged it as an accessory set, not a figure. The tomahawk and funnel pod are genuinely worth the money, the pistols and rifle are filler you will forget about within a week. If you already have a shelf of HG Zeon suits with empty hands, this earns its spot in the cart.
Best for: Zeon-suit collectors who want extra weapon variety on the cheap, not solo buyers looking for a display centerpiece
What it is
This is Bandai's HG Build Custom Ballistic Weapons set, a runner-only kit with no mobile suit in the box. You get a double-headed W Beam Tomahawk that splits into two separate axes, a funnel launcher pod with three tethered funnels, a rifle, and a bazooka that breaks into three pieces. It was built to arm the HG Gundam The Origin Zaku II line, with a mounting joint for the tomahawk on the rear waist armor, a shield adapter for the funnel pod, and a backpack joint for the bazooka. I built it in under twenty minutes and immediately started handing pieces off to Zakus and Doms already on my shelf. For the price, that instant upgrade in silhouette and presence is a genuinely fun payoff.
The catch
The parts are simple and it shows. Detail is soft compared to a modern HG weapon sprue, gate placement is basic since Bandai did not expect anyone to display these bare, and there is real cleanup on the flat axe faces if you care about nub marks. The bigger complaint I saw echoed across reviews is grip: several of the guns and even the tomahawk handle are loose enough to slip out of tighter HG hand parts, especially on suits this set was not specifically engineered for. Compatibility outside the Origin Zaku II lineup is hit or miss too, so test-fit before you commit to a pose.
Who it's for
Buy this if you collect HG Zeon suits and want more believable armament without paying MG prices, or if you like parts-farming weapon sprues for kitbashes. Skip it if you are new to the hobby and want one satisfying standalone build, this kit has no figure at its center and will feel thin on its own. It also is not the answer if your shelf is all Federation suits, since the mounting hardware and proportions lean Zeon. Treat it as a cheap add-on purchase alongside a suit you already love, not a first kit.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Nothing here will challenge you. Runners are small, parts count is low, and there are no stickers to fuss over since everything is molded in solid color. The flat faces of the tomahawk blades show nub marks if you do not clip carefully, and the bazooka's three-piece breakdown is satisfying to snap together even though it is mostly for display posing rather than actual articulation.
The standout piece is the double tomahawk, the hinge lets you angle the two axe heads independently and it reads as a real weapon once it is in a Zaku's hand. The funnel pod is the second win, with a shield-mount adapter that turns a plain HG shield into a support-weapon platform. The rifle and pistols are the weak link, functional but generic, and the loose hand-grip fit on some of the guns undercuts the value a little. For the price this is still a fair trade if you want variety, just do not expect MG-level heft in your palm.
Lore & trivia
- 01The HGBC (HG Build Custom) line was designed around Gundam Build Fighters, the series about characters battling with customized Gunpla, so weapon-only runner sets like this one exist to feed that customization hobby directly.
- 02Ballistic Weapons released in Japan in October 2017 at a list price of 600 yen, making it one of the cheapest entries in the HGBC weapons catalog.
- 03The set was specifically tooled with mounting joints for the HG Gundam The Origin Zaku II, including a rear waist-armor joint for the tomahawk and a backpack adapter for the bazooka, rather than being a generic universal-fit accessory pack.
