This is a kit I respect more than I love, and I mean that as a compliment.
The engineering underneath the Mack Knife's thin limbs is genuinely clever, with big universal ball joints doing work you never see on a typical HG, but the suit's whole design philosophy fights against a normal desk display. I had fun building it once I stopped expecting it to behave like a Gundam and started treating it like a flight sculpture.
Best for: builders who want something structurally weird and are fine displaying it on a stand instead of standing it on a shelf
What it is
The Mack Knife Mass Production Type is the grunt version of Captain Mask's personal CAMS-05, reskinned with a monoeye head and a different color scheme, and it captures the source anime's oddest mobile suit design almost perfectly. The torso is tiny, the limbs are thin rods, and the shoulders and hips run on big revoltech-style ball joints instead of the usual polycap setup. Building it feels less like assembling a soldier and more like assembling a marionette, and once it's together the range of motion at the shoulders in particular is something I have not felt on another HG in this price range.
The catch
The kit ships with an obvious remold compromise: the booster pack was clearly meant to be molded red but comes out in yellow plastic instead, so you get two cone-shaped foil stickers to fake the color where the mold color falls short. The suit also cannot stand well on its own feet, by design, since it is meant to be posed in a diving or zooming stance on the included flight stand rather than standing flat-footed. The legs only bend to about 90 degrees, which is fine for flight poses but limiting if you want a grounded stance, and this being a P-Bandai exclusive means it is not something you can just grab off a store shelf.
Who it's for
Grab this one if you already like Reconguista in G or you collect oddball mecha designs and want a kit that plays with articulation differently than every other HG on your shelf. The ball-joint shoulder and hip engineering alone makes it worth a look for anyone curious about how Bandai solves unusual anatomy. Skip it if you want a kit that stands proudly at attention without a stand, or if remold stickers and P-Bandai exclusivity are dealbreakers for you. This is a display-in-motion kit, not a display-at-attention kit, and it is honest about that from the runners onward.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly runs across 10 runners with foil stickers and no glue required, and nothing about the build itself is difficult. The parts are small given the thin-limbed design, so gate placement and cleanup take a bit more care than a typical bulkier HG, but there is nothing here that trips up a builder with a few kits under their belt.
The standout engineering is entirely in the joints. The shoulder pads use a universal ball joint similar to revoltech hardware, giving the arms an unusually wide swing range in nearly every direction, and the hips mirror that same setup for the thighs. Combined with the flight stand and pose adaptors in the box, the kit is clearly built to be displayed mid-maneuver rather than standing still, and it delivers on that specific idea better than most HGs even attempt.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Mack Knife Mass Production Type is a grunt variant of the CAMS-05 Mack Knife, the personal transforming mobile suit piloted by Captain Mask in Gundam: Reconguista in G.
- 02It swaps Mask's mono-eye-less personal color scheme for a new head unit and paint scheme befitting a mass-produced Capital Army unit, while reusing standard parts from other suits in its lineage.
- 03The suit carries a built-in missile system paired with a Photon Eye AI targeting unit designed to stay accurate even through scattered Minovsky particle interference.
- 04It transforms into a high-speed flight form with a long-range booster assembly, which is why the kit is engineered around aerial posing rather than a standard ground stance.
