The verdict

This is not a mobile suit, it is HGBD:R #40, a weapon and backpack accessory kit, and once I stopped judging it like a normal HG it turned out to be a fun little side project.

You get a transforming double rifle backpack, two lengths of bendable lead wire for cable work, and a set of universal joints that let it clip onto almost any HG with a standard back port. I like it best as a fifteen minute detour between real builds, something to dress up a plain kit rather than something to build on its own merits.

Best for: Builders who already own a shelf of HG kits and want a cheap way to give one a gunslinger backpack and cable-work flair

The full review

What it is

The Double Rebake Rifle is Bandai's option parts release tied to the Load Astray Double Rebake from Build Divers Re:RISE, sold on its own so you can graft its signature weapon onto other kits. The backpack splits and reconfigures into a two-barrel rifle, and two lengths of soft lead wire let you route cables from the rifle back to the shoulders, the kind of detailing you normally only see on high-end MG kits. I went in expecting a throwaway weapon sprue and came out genuinely enjoying the fifteen minutes it took to twist the lead wire into a shape I liked. It scratches an itch none of my full kits do.

The catch

This is an accessory, not a model, so there is no articulation, no inner frame, and nothing resembling a normal build arc, if you are expecting a kit review in the usual sense you will be disappointed there is no suit to pose. The universal joint set is generic enough that fit varies kit to kit, some HG back ports take the connector cleanly and others need a little test-fitting before it sits right. The lead wire is satisfying to shape but it is soft metal, so it dents if you bend it back and forth too many times, and there are no extra color options beyond what molds in.

Who it's for

Buy this if you collect HG kits and want an easy, cheap way to add a rifle backpack and cable detailing to something already on your shelf, or if you are specifically chasing the Load Astray Double Rebake look. Skip it if you are new to the hobby and want your money going toward a full mobile suit with real articulation, this kit will not give you that experience and was never meant to. I keep mine in the parts box for exactly the moment a plain kit needs a little more personality, and that is the right way to think about it.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

There is no runner-by-runner assembly story here the way there is with a full HG, the parts count is small and cleanup is quick, a handful of gates on the backpack shell and rifle halves with nothing fiddly to speak of. The lead wire needs a gentle hand, it holds a bend well the first few tries but work-hardens if you keep reshaping it, so decide on your cable routing before you commit.

The best engineering here is the transform hinge that turns the backpack into a two-barrel rifle without extra tools, it is a clean single mechanism that snaps positively in both states. The universal joint adapter is the other half of the value proposition, it is what makes this worth owning if you already have HG kits with standard back ports, since it turns any of them into a canvas for this weapon.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Double Rebake Rifle is HGBD:R release #40, sold as option parts separate from the full Load Astray Double Rebake kit (#38) it was designed alongside.
  • 02Load Astray Double Rebake is a two-pilot Gunpla built by the characters Koichi Nanase and Tsukasa Shiba in Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE, switching between a ranged Cuadro mode and a melee Reverso mode depending on which side faces front.
  • 03The design traces back to Lord Astray Z from the Gundam SEED Astray: Princess of the Sky manga, and reuses molds from the earlier Gundam Astray No-Name kit from the original Build Divers series.
  • 04The kit released in December 2020 and includes joint parts specifically so the rifle backpack can be shared across other HG kits with universal back-mount ports.
