The verdict

This is the HG G-Self I actually wanted back in 2014, arriving over a decade late.

Bandai took the improved ver. 1.25 body from the Perfect Pack release and bundled it with both the Atmospheric Pack and the Space Pack, so you get the full-flight Earth loadout and the binder-heavy space loadout from one kit. The core suit builds cleaner and poses better than the original release ever did. It still isn't a fully painted show-accurate G-Self out of the box, but as a two-in-one HG it is a genuinely good value proposition for Reconguista fans.

Best for: Reconguista in G fans who want both G-Self loadouts without buying two separate HGs

The full review

What it is

This kit gives you the vanilla G-Self body built on the corrected 1.25 tooling, plus a full set of Atmospheric Pack wings and thrusters and a separate Space Pack with ball-socketed binders. I like that Bandai didn't just reissue the old assault pack kit again, they went back to the sculpt that actually fixed the head detail and shoulder proportions first introduced on the Gundam Base exclusive Perfect Pack release, then split the packs out so you get both configurations in one Premium Bandai box. Swapping between the atmospheric loadout and the space loadout takes minutes since both mount to the same backpack peg, and having the option sitting in the box rather than needing a second kit is exactly the kind of value call that makes an HG worth revisiting.

The catch

The part that will bug builders who know their Gunpla history is that this is still fundamentally a 2014-era HG under the improved tooling, and Bandai leaned on the same sticker sheet approach rather than adding real color separation. The beam rifle molds in plain gray when the show design calls for white, blue, and yellow accents, and the shoulder vents that should read yellow and black stay unpainted. None of that is new to this release, it is a known complaint carried over from the original assault pack kit and repeated on the Perfect Pack version too. At 5,500 yen through Premium Bandai it also isn't cheap for an HG, even with two packs in the box.

Who it's for

Buy this if you already like Reconguista in G and want the definitive HG version of the G-Self without hunting down a separate Atmospheric Pack kit and a separate Space Pack kit. It is also a reasonable pickup for HG collectors who enjoy backpack-swap gimmicks and don't mind doing some sticker work or light panel lining to get the color scheme where the anime has it. Skip it if you want a kit that looks fully painted straight off the runners, or if you were hoping the 1.25 retool meant Bandai finally molded the beam rifle and vent colors, because they didn't.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The vanilla G-Self body goes together the way most modern HGs do, snap-fit with reasonable gate placement, and the ver. 1.25 revisions mean less fighting with the head unit and shoulder joints than the original tooling required. Where the build slows down is the sticker application, since color-correcting seals still carry the load for the beam rifle stripes and the shoulder vent colors that the plastic itself doesn't provide.

The hip joints slide down to clear the leg articulation, which combined with the 110-degree elbows and 120-degree knees gives the G-Self a wider stance and more dynamic poses than I expected out of this line. The Atmospheric Pack's wings tilt front to back for flight poses, and the Space Pack's binders swivel on ball-and-socket joints, so both loadouts actually earn their keep in a display rather than just being static armor. Getting two full weapon and equipment sets in one box is the real value story here.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The YG-111 G-Self is a one-of-a-kind prototype built by Towasangan rebels using the ancient Rose of Hermes blueprints and a unique full-body Photon Frame, which is why it can equip such a wide range of external Packs.
  • 02In the story, the G-Self can only be piloted by Bellri Zenam and two other specific characters, Aida Surugan and Raraiya Monday, tying the machine's control directly to the plot rather than treating it as a generic prototype.
  • 03This release reuses the corrected ver. 1.25 sculpt that first appeared on the Gundam Base exclusive HG G-Self Perfect Pack, making the previously store-exclusive body improvements available through a more accessible Premium Bandai order.
  • 04The kit released in January 2026 through Premium Bandai at 5,500 yen, positioned as a more widely obtainable alternative to the earlier Gundam Base-limited Perfect Pack version.
