This is one of the best HG grunt kits Bandai has put out, and I say that after building plenty of forgettable mass-production suits.
It borrows its frame and joints straight from the HG Aile Strike lineage, which means the articulation is already sorted before you clip a single part. Zero stickers, real molded color separation, and a shield and beam carbine that actually look the part. For a background mobile suit from SEED Destiny, it punches way above its lane.
Best for: Builders who want a posable, sticker-free grunt suit and SEED Destiny fans filling out an Earth Alliance shelf
What it is
The Dagger L is Bandai finally giving the Earth Alliance's everyman mobile suit the kit it deserved. I went in expecting a simple recolor job and came out impressed. The frame and articulation are lifted from the HG Aile Strike family, so the hips, knees, and shoulders all move with real confidence, no stiff grunt-suit compromises here. There's not a single sticker in the box. Every color you see on the finished kit is molded plastic, including the green and white panel breakup on the torso and legs, which is rare for a background unit at this price. It comes with a beam carbine, two beam sabers, and a shield, and the whole package feels like Bandai treated a side character with real respect.
The catch
It's still an HG, so the detail is implied rather than deeply engraved, and up close the surface is simpler than what you'd get from a Master Grade. Some parts, especially around the skirt armor and rear waist, ride a little loose after repeated posing, which is a known quirk carried over from the donor frame it's built on. Being a Skill Level 2 kit, gate marks land in visible spots on the limbs and shield edge, so cleanup matters more than usual if you want a clean silhouette. It's also a single-release grunt suit, so if you want an army of them for a diorama you're hunting reruns.
Who it's for
Grab this one if you like SEED Destiny, want a genuinely fun HG build, or you're the type who appreciates when a mass-production suit gets treated like a main character. The articulation alone makes it worth posing on a shelf rather than parking it in a standing idle pose. Skip it if you specifically want laser-sharp panel lines and inner-frame detail, that's an MG conversation, not an HG one. For the price and the grade, though, this is close to a model of what a good HG grunt kit should be.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
This is a Skill Level 2 kit, so expect basic nub cleanup and a little sanding on visible edges, especially around the shield rim and limb seams. The runners are laid out sensibly and nothing here fights you, it's a relaxed build rather than a fiddly one. Parts fit snugly on first assembly, though a few of the connection points loosen slightly after you've posed the kit a handful of times, a known trait of the frame family it borrows from.
Where this kit earns its reputation is the frame underneath. Because it shares engineering with the HG Aile Strike and Build Strike line, the hip and knee joints allow a genuinely wide range of dynamic poses, not the stiff, limited stance you'd expect from a background grunt suit. Color separation is the other standout, every panel of green, white, and grey on the finished model comes from the plastic itself, and the beam carbine, twin beam sabers, and shield round out a loadout that actually feels complete for an HG price point.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Dagger L is a further development of the GAT-01A1 Dagger (the '105 Dagger'), built to cut costs by dropping the laminated armor of its predecessor while keeping full Striker Pack compatibility.
- 02It carries the Mk315 'Stiletto,' a rocket-propelled anti-armor knife stored in each side skirt armor that doubles as a thrown weapon or a small bomb.
- 03This HG kit shares its attachment point with the HGCE GAT-04 Windam's Glider Pack and other HG Striker Packs, so builders can equip it with the Jet, Sword, Launcher, or Doppelhorn Striker loadouts from the Destiny-era HG lineup.
- 04The kit released in April 2021 as HGCE #237, giving Gundam SEED Destiny's most common Earth Alliance grunt suit its first-ever plastic model kit.
