GAT-04 Windam (Neo Roanoke Custom)

The same clever Fine Build frame under a coat of purple that means a lot more than it looks like.

The verdict

This is the excellent base HG Windam wearing Neo Roanoke's purple and gray, and that base kit is genuinely one of the better engineered HG lines Bandai has made.

The Fine Build frame gives you real range of motion out of very few parts, which is the whole trick here. Where this version earns or loses your money is entirely about whether the color story matters to you, because structurally it is identical to the far cheaper standard release.

Best for: SEED Destiny fans who want Mu La Flaga's secret identity on the shelf, not people shopping for the cheapest Windam

The full review

What it is

I went into this expecting another Earth Alliance grunt suit and came out impressed by how much the Fine Build frame does with so little. Each limb runs on just two main frame parts, but the elbows still bend past 90 degrees, the shoulders swing forward on ball joints, and the head sits on a double ball neck that actually tilts and turns instead of just spinning. The purple and gunmetal molded color reads as Neo Roanoke's palette straight off the runners, no painting required to get the basic scheme right, and the jet striker pack clips on with real hinge movement rather than being a static blob glued to the back.

The catch

The molded plastic gets you close but not all the way there. Panel lines, the visor, and several trim details are stickers or need a marker and a steady hand, and the foil sticker sheet is fussy compared to a proper decal set. The bigger issue builders flag across the board is the C-clip elbow and knee joints, which loosen with repeated posing since the tension comes from a small plastic clip rather than a metal ratchet. A couple drops of thin super glue on the clip helps but does not fully cure it. And this is a Bandai Premium / P-Bandai exclusive release, so you are paying a real premium over the standard blue and white HG Windam for what is fundamentally a colorway.

Who it's for

If you are building out the Phantom Pain roster or you care about the reveal that Neo Roanoke is actually Mu La Flaga in disguise, this is the version to own, the purple is the whole point and it looks sharp on a shelf next to Chaos and the rest of that unit. If you just want a good HG Windam to pose and don't care which paint job, buy the standard release and save the premium markup for something else. Either way, expect to spend a little time with panel liner and maybe a dab of glue in the joints to keep it standing years down the line.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The build itself is quick and satisfying, which is the point of Fine Build: each arm and leg goes together from just two main frame pieces, so you are not fiddling with a dozen tiny inner frame parts like you would on a more traditional HG. Gate placement is clean and cleanup is minor. The purple molded plastic is a strong color match right out of the bag, so even an unpainted build looks intentional rather than like a placeholder.

Articulation is the standout: elbows bend past 90 degrees, the head runs on a double ball-and-socket neck, and the arms raise to the horizontal cleanly. The rear skirt armor is a single piece, so hip rotation is a bit more limited than kits with split skirts, but it is a minor tradeoff. Loadout covers a beam rifle, two beam sabers, and an Assault Shield Type E, plus the hinged jet striker pack, which is a fair spread of gear for an HG at this price point.

Lore & trivia

  • 01Neo Roanoke is the amnesiac alias of Mu La Flaga, who was presumed dead after shielding the Archangel during the First Alliance-PLANT War and was recovered with severe memory loss.
  • 02The purple color of this Windam is a deliberate callback: it echoes the personal purple used by Mu La Flaga before his identity was erased, tying the paint job directly into the character twist.
  • 03Neo Roanoke commands the Phantom Pain unit within the Earth Alliance's 81st Autonomous Mobile Group, and later transitions from the Windam into the ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam.
  • 04This HGCE release reuses the Fine Build frame introduced with the standard HG Windam kit, with the Neo Roanoke Custom issued as a Bandai Premium (P-Bandai) exclusive colorway.
