The verdict

This kit is a genuinely fun build wearing a strange origin story, and I like it more than its Premium Bandai exclusivity would suggest.

Under the new gun-and-shield loadout is the Shining Gundam frame, and that frame was built for hand to hand combat, so the joints move the way a fighting game character should. The catch is that you have to want this specific version, the darker "Before" colorway, badly enough to chase down a limited release instead of the easier-to-find standard Shining Break.

Best for: G Gundam fans who already love the Shining Gundam mold and want the gun-toting Build Divers spin on it

The full review

What it is

This is Ark's custom rebuild of Shining Gundam from Gundam Build Divers Break, stripped of the Super Mode gimmicks and Shining Finger in favor of a straightforward beam rifle, a shield, twin beam sabers, and a flight mode. What struck me first is how much of the donor kit's personality survives the makeover. The Shining Gundam frame was designed around Domon's martial arts style, so the hips, shoulders, and ankles were already tuned for deep, held poses long before this variant existed, and that inheritance is the best thing about building it. Snapping it together feels less like assembling a gunfighter and more like assembling a brawler who picked up a rifle, and the joints back that feeling up in hand.

The catch

This is a Premium Bandai release, and the "Before" colorway specifically is a limited variant of an already limited kit, so you are paying exclusivity pricing and doing secondary market legwork rather than grabbing it off a store shelf. The ten runners keep part count modest for an HG, and the included sticker sheet is doing real work on the color separation since molded color alone does not cover everything. None of that is a dealbreaker, but if you are the kind of builder who wants everything painted and molded with zero decal reliance, budget time for that yourself.

Who it's for

Buy this if you already like the Shining Gundam mold's articulation and want the gun-and-shield reinterpretation with a darker, moodier colorway than the standard release. It also makes sense if you are building out a Gundam Build Divers Break shelf and want Ark's machine specifically in its "before" state. Skip it if exclusivity pricing and secondary market hunting are a dealbreaker for you, or if you would rather just build the original Shining Gundam and get the Super Mode gimmick the Break variant deliberately removes.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The assembly itself is straightforward HG-era Bandai, snap-fit with the usual visible nub placement rather than anything hidden, and nothing about the gate locations surprised me during cleanup. Where the build earns its keep is in how the parts move once assembled, since the frame underneath was engineered for a fighting stance, not a standing pose, and you feel that the moment you start posing the legs and torso together.

Color separation leans on the sticker sheet more than a fully molded kit would, which is typical for a Premium Bandai variant built around a specific alternate colorway rather than a mass-retail release. The accessory loadout, rifle, shield, and twin beam sabers plus a flight mode, gives you more to actually do with the finished kit than a lot of similarly sized HGs, even without the donor suit's signature techniques.

Lore & trivia

  • 01Gundam Shining Break is Ark's custom Gunpla in Gundam Build Divers Break, built using the GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam as its base unit.
  • 02The build deliberately removes Shining Gundam's Super Mode and Shining Finger in favor of a beam rifle, shield, and flight mode, trading the original's signature martial arts finisher for straightforward ranged combat.
  • 03The original Shining Gundam was Domon Kasshu's Neo Japan machine from Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and its frame has long been regarded as one of the better-articulated HG-era molds from that series.
  • 04This "Before" version is a Premium Bandai variant depicting an earlier color state of the Shining Break, released alongside the standard HGBD Gundam Shining Break kit.
