This is one of the best HG kits to come out of the GQuuuuuuX line, and the swap-head gimmick is what pushes it past its sister kit for me.
GFreD takes the same well-engineered frame as the gMS-Omega GQuuuuuuX and gives it a genuinely strange silhouette, courtesy of those ear-mounted ES Bits, without sacrificing any of the pose range that made the base kit a favorite. At this price point I did not expect this much personality out of the box.
Best for: HG builders who want a striking, oddball silhouette with real engineering behind it, not just a paint-swap of the lead unit
What it is
GFreD is Nyaan's mobile suit from Gundam GQuuuuuuX, built on essentially the same inner engineering as the show's lead unit, the gMS-Omega GQuuuuuuX, but reworked with new shoulders, a different color scheme, and a head that carries the two ES Bit remote weapons, Luna and Artemis, as ear-like fixtures. You get two interchangeable head parts so you can display the closed state or the deployed state that the show uses for its big transformation beat. Building it felt familiar in the best way: snap-fit assembly, no glue or paint required, and a torso and hip structure that lets you push into deep, dynamic poses right off the runners.
The catch
The beam rifle grip and the arms holding accessories are where builders have flagged durability worries, the wrist joints are small and the hands can loosen up if you swap weapons in and out a lot. Some panel lines around the shoulders and the ES Bit connectors need care during clip-out since the parts are thin and easy to stress. The flight-pose stand for displaying the separated ES Bits is sold separately, so budget for that if you want the full show-accurate look. At around 2,530 yen it is priced like a standard HG, but a couple of the smaller vulcan and connector pieces are fiddly for a kit this size.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already like the HG GQuuuuuuX engineering and want a second, visually distinct kit from the same show, or if the ES Bit ear gimmick and the swappable head states are what drew you in. It also works as a good pickup for builders who want strong articulation without stepping up to RG fiddliness or MG cost. Skip it if you are hunting for the most screen-accurate central protagonist unit (that is GQuuuuuuX itself, not GFreD) or if you specifically want a kit with zero small-part handling, since the ES Bits and their connectors reward a steady hand.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly is snap-fit start to finish, no glue or paint needed, and runner layout keeps gate marks tucked into panel lines rather than flat surfaces, so cleanup is light. The head-swap mechanism clicks in cleanly and the backpack unit has its own articulation point, which lets it counterbalance and add depth to poses instead of sitting stiff on the back.
The shared engineering with the gMS-Omega GQuuuuuuX carries over here: shoulders swing forward and back with real range, elbows and knees bend well past 90 degrees, and the waist rotates close to a full turn with only minor panel interference. Loadout includes a beam rifle, shield, a pair of beam sabers with distinctive ring-guard hilts, four manubrium-mounted vulcans, and the two detachable ES Bits, which is a strong accessory count for an HG in this price band.
