This is a Federation mook suit that got the engineering budget of a protagonist kit, and it shows the second you start clipping parts.
The GN-XIV borrows its frame from the Gundam Build Fighters GN-XIV Type.GBF kit, so under the commander color scheme you get double-jointed knees, a ball-socket neck, and shoulders that actually swing forward instead of just rotating in place. I did not expect a 2018 P-Bandai suit kit to out-articulate some of the actual Gundams from the same era, but here we are.
Best for: Gundam 00 fans and mass-production-suit collectors who want a GN-X variant with real joint engineering instead of a static background prop
What it is
The GN-XIV is the last and most refined version of the GN-X mass-production line the Earth Sphere Federation fielded in Awakening of the Trailblazer, and this HG release recolors the Type.GBF mold into the in-show commander scheme worn by pilots like Andrei Smirnov and Patrick Colasour. Because it shares its frame with a Build Fighters kit, the engineering is a level above what you'd expect from a background mob suit. The shoulders swing back and forth and tilt, the waist spins a full 360 degrees, and the skirt armor lifts out of the way so the legs actually kick forward without armor collision. Building it felt less like assembling filler and more like getting a bonus Gundam-tier frame in mass-production clothing.
The catch
It's still an HG in a niche corner of the lineup, which means the loadout runs light next to a flagship release, mostly the GN beam rifle in its two configurations plus a GN shield, and finish quality leans on molded color more than panel lining to read well. Being a P-Bandai exclusive also means it went out of print fast and now trades at a premium over what a mainline retail HG costs, so value for money depends entirely on what you're willing to pay a secondary market for a suit that never got a wide release. The swappable left hand is a nice touch but it's the only real posing accessory beyond the weapons.
Who it's for
Grab this if you already like the GN-X design language and want the most mechanically satisfying version of it, or if you're building out an Awakening of the Trailblazer Federation lineup and want the commander unit specifically rather than the standard mass-production green. It's also a good pickup for anyone who enjoys posing mob suits as seriously as protagonist units, since the frame supports it. Skip it if you only want mainline, easy-to-find kits at retail price, or if you need a big accessory loadout to feel like the price was worth it, because this one wins on frame engineering, not extras.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly is straightforward HG snap-fit with clean gate placement, nothing that trips up someone who has built a handful of kits before. The frame borrowed from the Type.GBF mold means joints feel tighter and more deliberate than a lot of same-era mass-production HGs, and the parts fit together with minimal looseness right out of the runners.
The standout here is articulation for a background suit: the neck ball joint, the 360-degree waist, and the forward-swinging shoulders let it hold genuinely dynamic poses instead of the stiff at-attention stance a lot of grunt-suit kits are stuck with. Color separation on the commander scheme comes through mostly in molded plastic rather than stickers, and the swappable left hand adds a small but welcome bit of posing variety alongside the GN beam rifle and shield.
Lore & trivia
- 01The GN-XIV is the fourth and final generation of the GN-X mass-production line built after A-LAWS was disbanded, meant to give the Federation a stable GN Tau-powered suit that could stand alongside Celestial Being's true GN Drive machines.
- 02This kit recolors the mold from the HGBF GNX-803T GN-XIV Type.GBF into the in-universe commander scheme, making it a repaint of a Gundam Build Fighters kit rather than an all-new tool.
- 03Notable commander-type pilots in Awakening of the Trailblazer include Andrei Smirnov and Patrick Colasour, both established Federation and A-LAWS characters from earlier in the Gundam 00 timeline.
- 04It was released in December 2018 as a Bandai Hobby Online Shop (P-Bandai) exclusive rather than a general retail HG.
