Gundam QuuuuuuX "Endymion Unit Awakened"

A cheap snap-fit kit that turns a glowing psycho-frame gimmick into the whole reason to build it.

The verdict

I went in expecting a reskin and came out genuinely won over by the head unit gimmick alone.

This is the awakened repaint of the original HG GQuuuuuuX, and Bandai used the reissue to actually improve the kit rather than just swap stickers. The molded color is deep red, black, and white with translucent pink-purple psycho-frame bits doing real work, and the opening head with its new PET-sheet effect parts sells the anime's climax scene better than I expected an HG to manage. It is not a complex build, but it is a satisfying one.

Best for: GQuuuuuuX fans and budget-conscious builders who want the anime-accurate awakened look without touching a paintbrush

The full review

What it is

This is the Endymion Unit Awakened version of the HG GQuuuuuuX, the suit Amate Yuzuriha pilots once the Omega Psycommu system goes fully active. Bandai kept the core frame from the standard release but re-molded the head to open and close, and added clear PET sheet parts that mimic the glowing effect rippling off the suit in its final battle. Snap it together and the deep red and black bodywork with translucent psycho-frame accents in the joints looks close to screen-accurate straight off the runners, no paint required. For an HG at roughly 2,600 yen, that is a lot of anime-specific personality packed into a small, cheap kit.

The catch

The frame underneath is unchanged from the original HG, so if you already built that version there is not much new engineering here, just the head, the effect parts, and a fresh color scheme. It is still a fairly simple snap-fit build with the usual HG-level nub placement, so cleanup is quick but there is nothing fancy going on structurally. The four psycommu orbs and effect sheets are neat once assembled but a little fiddly to seat cleanly, and a couple of builders online note the novelty of the head gimmick wears thin once you have opened and closed it a dozen times.

Who it's for

Grab this if you watched GQuuuuuuX and want the awakened-form suit on your shelf without spending MG money or picking up a brush, the color separation alone earns it a spot in a display case. It is also a solid pickup for HG collectors who like a gimmick kit that photographs well. Skip it if you already own the standard-release HG GQuuuuuuX and are not attached to the awakened aesthetic specifically, since the frame and articulation are identical and you would mostly be paying for the head swap and effect parts twice.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The build is quick and beginner-friendly, snap-fit with no glue needed, and gate placement is typical clean HG work so cleanup does not take long. The new head piece is the one part that takes a little care, since the opening mechanism has small tabs that need to click home fully or the effect sheet sits crooked.

Where this kit earns its keep is color separation and the gimmick. Molded parts cover most of the anime-accurate red, black, and white without stickers, and the translucent pink-purple psycho-frame accents in the joints catch light nicely on a shelf. Articulation in the torso and hips is generous enough for the dynamic action poses the anime is known for, and the loadout carries over the same weapons and interchangeable hands as the standard release, so accessory count is solid for the price.
