I'll say this plainly, it's not a mobile suit, it's a parts box, and once I accepted that I actually had fun with it.
The large rifle merges into a clay bazooka that outguns the stock ZZ II loadout, and the lance add-on gives Gyancelot a longer, meaner reach. For three or four dollars worth of grey plastic it punches well above its price, but only if you already own the kits it was designed to feed.
Best for: Gundam Build Fighters Try fans who already own HGBF ZZ II Gundam or Gyancelot and want beefier weapons for the display shelf
What it is
This is a small HG Build Custom runner set, two sprues of light grey plastic, one small rifle, one large rifle that clips together into a bulkier clay bazooka, and an extension piece for Gyancelot's lance, plus a single foil sticker for trim. There's no mobile suit body here, it's a straight-up armory expansion aimed at two specific 1/144 kits from the Build Fighters Try side story. I went in expecting filler and came out liking it more than I expected, the clay bazooka in particular has real bulk and reads as a genuine upgrade over the stock ZZ II rifle rather than a reskin.
The catch
The obvious catch is usefulness. If you don't own an HGBF ZZ II Gundam or Gyancelot, this set does almost nothing for you, the lance extension only fits Gyancelot's specific mount and the guns are sized for ZZ II's grip. Nub placement is fine but there's very little to actually build, this is a fifteen minute project, not an evening one. Bandai also cut it from most regular retail rotation not long after release, so it shows up used or through secondary sellers more often than new in western markets now.
Who it's for
Buy this if you're deep enough into Build Fighters Try to own the two kits it was made for and want their loadouts to look less stock on the shelf. Skip it if you're new to the hobby or don't already have ZZ II or Gyancelot sitting in your collection, there's nothing here to pose on its own and no articulation story to tell. For most builders this belongs in the same bin as other weapon expansion packs, a cheap add-on you grab specifically, not a kit you seek out cold.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
There isn't much of a build to speak of, it's two runners and a handful of clips. Gate placement is unremarkable but clean, nothing that leaves a visible scar on the finished weapon, and the foil sticker handles the small trim details so there's no paint required to get a finished look.
The real engineering interest is in the combining rifle. Snapping the stock ZZ II rifle together with the newly molded clay bazooka housing produces a chunkier, more gun-like silhouette that looks purpose built rather than bolted on. The Gyancelot lance extension slots into the existing haft cleanly and holds its grip in the hand without loosening, which matters more than it sounds like for a weapon meant to be posed mid-swing.
Lore & trivia
- 01The set is catalog number 026 in Bandai's HG Build Custom (HGBC) accessory line, product code BANN07606, released August 4, 2016.
- 02It was designed specifically to expand two kits from Gundam Build Fighters Try, the HGBF ZZ II Gundam and the HGBF Gyancelot.
- 03The included clay bazooka housing was newly molded for this set rather than reused from an existing kit, while the small and large rifles reference the stock ZZ II armament.
