The verdict

I did not expect a magazine supplement to be this satisfying to put together.

This is not a mobile suit, it is a standalone weapon kit, and once it is assembled it genuinely dwarfs the HG 1/144 figure meant to carry it. The engineering is clever for something this small and the build is fast and clean. My honest caveat is that it only makes sense if you already own a compatible kit to hand it to.

Best for: HG collectors who already own a Sazabi or Gundam Local Type/FSD kit and want a scale-accurate long rifle to go with it

What it is

This started life as a Gundam Ace magazine supplement, a weapon-only kit designed by Katoki Hajime rather than a full mobile suit release. It goes together in one quick, clean sitting, nine components total, and every joint on it does something. The barrel shroud pivots and swivels, the grip can be parts-swapped into two different positions, and the scope and cooling barrel snap on with real precision for something this size. What got me was the scale once it was finished. Standard HG shoulder and hand joints can hold it one-handed just fine, but this thing is long, it visibly exceeds the height of the figure meant to be carrying it, and that oversized presence is exactly the appeal.

The catch

The obvious catch is that this is not a kit you build to stand on its own. It is a weapon accessory, so you need a compatible HG figure (originally the Sazabi or Gundam Local Type/FSD family, later Moon Gundam) already on your shelf for it to mean anything. It also started life as a bundled magazine exclusive rather than a normal retail release, so finding a copy at a reasonable price depends on reissues and the secondary market rather than a straightforward Bandai Hobby Site order. Getting a convincing two-handed grip out of standard HG wrist joints takes some trial and error, and the collapsible shoulder stock is bulky enough that it can crowd more dynamic poses.

Grab this if you already have a compatible 1/144 HG kit sitting around and want to give it a genuinely imposing long-range loadout, or if you just enjoy small, clever accessory builds between bigger projects. The build itself is short and smooth, which is exactly what I want out of an accessory kit like this. Gate placement is sensible and cleanup is minimal, and the parts click together with more precision than I expected from something bundled into a magazine. There are no stickers to fuss over here, it is a clean, straightforward sit-down build you can finish in one go.

The engineering is where this kit earns its keep. Katoki Hajime's design lets the barrel shroud's grip pivot and swivel, the handle repositions via a simple parts-swap for two different holding angles, and the whole rifle separates into nine distinct components including the scope and cooling barrel. Standard HG shoulder joints are strong enough to hold it one-handed, and once it is fully extended it is noticeably longer than the figure meant to carry it, which is the entire point of an in-universe long-range weapon like this.
