I went in expecting a reskin joke and came out with a kit I genuinely like on the shelf.
The blue and white patrol colors, the clear rotating shoulder sirens, and the tiny riot baton give this Zaku a personality none of its battlefield cousins have. It is not pushing any engineering boundaries, but it does not need to. It knows exactly what it is and commits to the bit.
Best for: GQuuuuuuX fans and Zaku collectors who want a novelty variant that still builds like a proper modern HG
What it is
This is the standard MS-06 Zaku II skeleton reworked as a law enforcement unit for Side 6, and Bandai clearly had fun with it. The shoulder sirens are molded in clear plastic and actually spin, the right shoulder shield is shrunk down for maneuverability, the left shoulder spikes are gone, and the mono eye is poseable like every good Zaku kit should be. The color separation is strong for an HG, molded in the blue, white, and gray you see on screen rather than leaning hard on stickers. Building it feels like building a familiar Zaku with a costume change, and the costume change is what makes it worth having.
The catch
Underneath the police paint job this is still a fairly basic 1/144 Zaku frame, so do not expect MG-level knee or ankle engineering. A few builders have flagged wanting a bit more range in the shoulders and hips once the siren blocks and shield are attached, since the added parts can get in each other's way mid-pose. Marking stickers are still included for the finer show-accurate details like badge emblems, so if you want a completely sticker-free build you will be doing some minor color matching yourself. It is also a niche release tied to a newer show, so it is easier to find while it is in print than a year or two down the line.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already like Zakus, want something different from another green grunt suit, or you are building a display group where a little humor helps (a Police Zaku pulling over a Gundam is an easy diorama joke that actually lands). Skip it if you specifically want a technical showcase kit or maximum poseability, since this is a fun variant build rather than an engineering flex. For the price of a standard HG you are getting a genuinely distinct paint scheme and accessory set, which is a good trade if the concept appeals to you at all.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build follows the familiar modern HG Zaku pattern, so cleanup is straightforward with well-placed gates and no major fit surprises reported. The new parts are the shoulder siren blocks, the smaller right shield, and the baton/holster piece on the left shield, and they snap on cleanly without extra tooling.
The standout touches are the clear-molded siren lenses, which read as show-accurate straight off the runner, and the retained mono eye articulation that lets you dial in expression the same way you would on any good HG Zaku. Loadout includes the 120mm machine gun, heat hawk, and the new baton, so you get the classic Zeon arsenal plus the novelty piece, which is solid value for a single-suit HG at this price point.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Police Zaku (MS-06-SSP) is a law enforcement mobile suit used by authorities in Side 6's Izuma, adapted from the standard Zeon MS-06 Zaku II frame seen in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
- 02Its modifications include rotating shoulder sirens, a downsized right shoulder shield for tighter maneuvering, and removal of the left shoulder spikes for a less combat-oriented profile.
- 03Alongside its new less-lethal baton, the kit retains the Zaku's classic 120mm machine gun and heat hawk as part of its armament options.
