This is one of the best entry-level Zakus Bandai has put out in years.
The GQuuuuuuX redesign takes the classic silhouette and thickens it up, rounds the legs, and gives it a face that actually reads as menacing on the shelf. I went in skeptical of yet another Char's Zaku and came out impressed by how much personality the sculpt carries for an HG price point.
Best for: HG builders who want the definitive alternate-universe Char's Zaku without touching a sprue cutter twice
What it is
This kit reinterprets Char's personal Zaku II through the GQuuuuuuX redesign, keeping the recognizable head and mono-eye but thickening the proportions and rounding out the legs into something more organic than the classic HGUC line. The mono-eye moves independently and the shoulder armor is on its own hinge separate from the arm, which sounds like a small thing until you are posing it with the bazooka raised and realize the shoulder is not fighting the arm for space. It comes loaded, a redesigned Zaku Bazooka, a machine gun, and a Heat Hawk, so you are not stuck posing an empty-handed grunt suit. For an HG, the amount of character packed into this thing surprised me.
The catch
The independent shoulder joint is also the kit's weak point. Multiple builders flag that the shoulder blocks feel fragile and can get in the way during certain poses, especially anything with the arm raised past shoulder height. Stickers do a lot of the color separation work on the trim and vents rather than molded plastic, so you are looking at a sticker session if you want the full anime look, and a few builders found the marking stickers finicky to place cleanly on the new curved surfaces. It is still an HG at HG money, so do not expect frame complexity or panel-line depth on the level of a Master Grade.
Who it's for
Grab this if you want a Char's Zaku that actually looks different from the ten other Char's Zakus on your shelf, or if you are new to the hobby and want a kit that rewards you with a genuinely dynamic pose right out of the box. Skip it if you specifically want the classic lean, angular One Year War Zaku silhouette, this is deliberately a redesign and reads as such. Skip it too if fragile-feeling joints are a dealbreaker for you, handle the shoulder hinges gently while posing.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
This is a straightforward HG snap build, no cement needed, and the redesigned leg and torso pieces go together cleanly. The main thing to watch is the shoulder block assembly, since it is a separate moving unit from the arm rather than molded as one piece, and a few builders noted it needs a gentler touch than the rest of the kit.
The standout engineering here is the independent mono-eye and shoulder articulation working together, it lets you dial in an aggressive forward lean or a raised-bazooka stance that older Zaku HGs could not really pull off. The weapon loadout, bazooka, machine gun, and heat hawk, is a genuine step up in accessory value for the HG price band, and the redesigned proportions give the whole thing more shelf presence than a straight repaint would have.
Lore & trivia
- 01This kit depicts the Zaku II as redesigned for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, a 2025 anime from studio khara and Sunrise set in an alternate Universal Century timeline where Char Aznable's theft of the RX-78-2 led to a Zeon victory in the One Year War.
- 02GQuuuuuuX's mechanical designs, including this Zaku redesign, come from Ikuto Yamashita, and the series was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki with scripts from Hideaki Anno and Yoji Enokido.
- 03The kit's redesigned Zaku Bazooka is a new sculpt made specifically for this GQuuuuuuX lineup rather than a reuse of the classic HGUC bazooka mold.
