This is the excellent HGUC Gouf Revive mold dipped in Chunichi Dragons navy blue with baseball team decals standing in for the usual Zeon markings, and once you get past the novelty it builds just as well as the standard release.
I went in expecting a gimmick and came out with a genuinely satisfying weekday build. The catch is that you're paying secondary market prices for a kit that was originally a 3,000 yen ballpark exclusive, and you're buying it for the color story as much as the suit.
Best for: Gouf loyalists and Gundam 40th anniversary collectors who want the Revive engineering in a one-off collaboration colorway
What it is
Underneath the Chunichi Dragons branding this is the 2019 HGUC Gouf Revive, and that's good news because the Revive Gouf is one of the nicer surprises in the modern HG lineup. It's molded in a much darker navy blue than the standard release, which actually suits the Gouf's blocky, gladiator-like silhouette better than I expected, and it comes packed with Chunichi Dragons logo decals instead of the usual Zeon insignia. Assembly is snap-fit start to finish, color separation on the shoulders, forearms, and that signature exhaust-pipe head is handled with molded plastic rather than paint, and the parts fit with the tight, confident click that Revive-line kits are known for.
The catch
This was a stadium giveaway tied to Chunichi Dragons game tickets in May 2019, not a retail shelf item, so you're hunting it on the secondary market and paying well above what a standard HGUC Gouf Revive costs. The baseball branding is going to read as either charming or completely pointless depending on whether you care about the collaboration, and it's not a suit you can display next to a straight Zeon lineup without the Dragons logo sticking out. Shared Gouf-mold quirks carry over too: the shoulder armor pops the torso ball joint out of socket if you're not careful moving it, and the head's exhaust port limits how far you can tilt it before it looks stiff.
Who it's for
If you collected the 2019 Gundam 40th anniversary baseball team crossover or you just love the Gouf as a suit and want an oddball variant for the shelf, this delivers a legitimately well-engineered kit wrapped in a fun piece of Gunpla trivia. Skip it if you want a suit you can pose next to Char's forces without the logo breaking the theme, or if the only reason you're interested is the base Gouf sculpt, because the standard HGUC Gouf Revive gets you the same build for a fraction of the price. For anyone chasing the story behind the kit rather than just the mobile suit, this is a fun pickup.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself is the same straightforward Revive-line experience as the standard Gouf: snap-fit throughout, no glue or paint needed to hit the color scheme, and the wedge gates on the runners mean you're not fighting stress-whitened nub marks after clipping parts free. The dark navy plastic reads clean straight off the runner, and the Chunichi Dragons decals go on cleanly over the shoulders and chest without fighting the panel lines.
The engineering highlight is still the leg articulation, the knees bend deep enough for genuine kneeling and combat poses, which is rare for a Gouf-shaped kit given how boxy the design is. The heat rod on the right forearm can be pulled out and bent into different shapes, though it won't hold a tight coil without help from a hair dryer to reheat the internal wire. The included Gatling shield and knuckle-duster fist round out a solid accessory loadout for an HG-tier kit, and the color separation on the exhaust pipe head is handled entirely in plastic, no stickers required for the main silhouette.
Lore & trivia
- 01The MS-07B Gouf was designed as a close-combat successor to the MS-06 Zaku II for the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War depicted in the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
- 02This kit was distributed as a giveaway with tickets to Chunichi Dragons NPB games at their home stadium starting May 3, 2019, part of a 2019 Gundam 40th anniversary collaboration that paired all twelve Japanese professional baseball teams with their own exclusive Gundam-franchise mobile suit color variant.
- 03The base mold is the HGUC #196 Gouf Revive, notable in the HG line for its wedge-gate runners, a molding technique that leaves a far smaller nub scar than the standard round gates used on most older HG kits.
- 04The Gouf's signature heat rod, a flexible high-frequency whip weapon mounted on the right forearm, was later redesigned as the magnetic-grapple heat wire carried by the MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom piloted by ace Norris Packard in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.
