The Gouf Custom mold gets wings, a gatling shield, and a much better excuse to fly.

The verdict

This is the Gouf Custom kit doing something more interesting with the same bones, and I think the aerodynamic backpack sells it.

The German gray plastic reads completely different from the standard olive Gouf, and once the shield gatling and heat sword are loaded up it looks like a suit built for a specific, dangerous job. It is not a kit that reinvents anything mechanically, but the presentation is strong enough that I stopped caring about that halfway through the build.

Best for: 08th MS Team fans and Gouf collectors who want the flight variant without hunting a MG

The full review

What it is

This is an HGUC built on the same frame as the earlier Gouf Custom, dressed in a distinct German gray colorway with the added control-surface wings on the backpack and waist armor that the show gave this variant. I liked how the wings actually change the silhouette instead of feeling bolted on, they widen the stance and make the suit look like it wants to move forward. The gatling shield is the star accessory, you can dock the heat sword or the 35mm gatling gun onto it and swap them depending on the pose you want. The mono-eye switches side to side with a small underside toggle, which is a nice touch for a kit this size.

The catch

The head only swivels left and right on its ball joint, so the up-down range builders usually want for dynamic poses just is not there, and that limits some of the flight poses this kit is otherwise built for. It reuses Gouf Custom tooling, so anyone who already owns that kit will recognize a lot of the frame and will not get much that is mechanically new. It was sold as a Bandai Hobby Online Shop and Premium Bandai exclusive rather than general retail, so pricing and availability run higher than a standard HGUC and secondhand hunting is often the only route now.

Who it's for

Buy this if you already like the Gouf line and want the flight variant specifically, or if you are building an 08th MS Team display and need the suit that ambushed the team before the story properly kicked off. Skip it if you are hunting for a cheap first HGUC, since the exclusive pricing works against it, or if you already built the standard Gouf Custom and are not attached to the flight variant's lore. For anyone who wants the definitive account of this suit without stepping up to a Master Grade, this fills that gap well.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The build itself is standard HGUC pace, nothing fiddly or frustrating, and the German gray runners cut clean with minimal visible gate marks once you clip carefully. Because it shares tooling with the Gouf Custom, anyone who has built that kit will move through this one fast, the differences are mostly in the backpack, waist wings, and the color themselves rather than new joint mechanisms.

Elbows and knees bend to about 90 degrees, which is enough for the grounded gunfight poses this suit is built around, and the shoulder lock is the standout engineering touch, it genuinely keeps a raised arm in place instead of sagging under the weight of the gatling shield. The shield itself is the value piece, letting you dock the heat sword, the gatling gun, or both depending on the scene you are building toward.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The MS-07H-8 was fitted with an upgraded backpack and thermonuclear jet engines generating roughly 108,400 kg of total thrust, plus aerodynamic control wings on the backpack and waist armor for flight stability.
  • 02Despite the upgrades, the Flight Type still suffered from engine overheating and rapid fuel consumption at high altitude and high speed, which kept its flight time short and meant it was never mass-produced.
  • 03In Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, a Flight Type piloted by Zhukov ambushed the 08th team en route to a Zeon base in Southeast Asia before later units were stationed to escort the Apsaras III.
  • 04This HGUC release reuses parts from the earlier HGUC Gouf Custom kit, distinguished mainly by its German gray coloring and the flight-specific backpack and wing components.
