This is the best Rick Dom kit Bandai has ever put out, wearing Challia Bull's colors instead of the Black Tri-Stars scheme.
I say that as someone who has built the old HGUC version and felt the difference immediately in the hands. The third leg folds into high-mobility mode with zero part swapping, the shoulders and hips actually let you hold a real thrust pose, and the multi-color plastic means most of the suit reads correctly right out of the runners. It is still a recolor of an existing GQ-line mold, so do not expect anything new sculpturally, but the mold itself earned the reuse.
Best for: HG builders who want the definitive Rick Dom engineering in an alternate colorway, and Zeon fans building out the GQuuuuuuX mobile suit lineup
What it is
This kit is the HG Gaia's/Ortega's Rick Dom mold recolored for Challia Bull, the Newtype officer who piloted a Rick Dom after his stint in the Braw Bro. The blue and grey scheme is genuinely striking on the shelf, and it stands apart from every other Dom variant in a collection without looking out of place next to the Gundam GQuuuuuuX line. What got me is how the kit builds. The third leg tucks up into flight mode without pulling a single part off, which past Dom kits never pulled off cleanly, and the big bazooka has a proper movable grip so it does not just hang limp in the hand.
The catch
The plastic is molded in very dark colors on some runners, and that combination makes nub and gate marks show up more than usual once you clip parts free, especially on the leg armor where the gates sit somewhere you will notice. The multi-color molding covers most of the suit, but the thruster interiors are still molded silver rather than the red seen in official art, so you are painting those in yourself if you want the box-art look. It is also, structurally, the same kit as the Gaia's/Ortega's release with a new color job, so if you already own that one you are paying again for paint, not new engineering.
Who it's for
If you want a Rick Dom that actually holds a stance and folds cleanly into its high-mobility configuration, this is the one to buy over the older HGUC tooling, and the Challia Bull scheme gives you a genuine alternative to the standard Zeon green. Skip it if you already built the Gaia's/Ortega's version and were hoping for new parts, because the mold underneath is identical. First-time Dom builders and anyone assembling the GQuuuuuuX Zeon side should grab this one without hesitation.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly is straightforward HG snap-fit, but the dark runners mean you want a sharp side cutter and a bit of cleanup patience, because the gate placement on the leg armor sits somewhere you will see it if you rush the nub removal. Nothing here fights you the way older Dom kits did, it is just a kit that punishes sloppy trimming more than a lighter-colored plastic would.
The engineering is the real story. The head runs on a double ball-socket neck with a four-way mono-eye, the waist spins a full 360 degrees, elbows bend past 90 degrees, and the thighs swing forward and back with the skirt armor lifting clear to give the legs room to move. Combined with the tool-free transformation into flight mode, this is the most posable Rick Dom on the market, and the four-color-per-runner molding tech means the blue, grey, and metallic accents mostly show up without a paintbrush.
Lore & trivia
- 01Challia Bull was a Principality of Zeon officer recalled from a Jupiter energy fleet command and piloted the MAN-03 Braw Bro mobile armor before this Rick Dom, believed by Gihren Zabi to be a Newtype
- 02This kit shares its core mold with the HG Gaia's/Ortega's Rick Dom (GQ), recolored for Challia Bull's appearance in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX
- 03The kit uses Bandai's multi-color-per-runner molding process, allowing up to four colors on a single set of parts without extra painting
