This is a nostalgia kit first and a modern build second.
The Dom Tropen's silhouette is still one of the best hover-type designs Zeon ever fielded, and this P-Bandai reissue gives it the sandier, more washed-out colors and pink mono-eye it wears in the Unicorn novel and OVA, plus a newly sculpted hand pair just to hold a grenade. But the plastic underneath is the original HGUC #017 tooling from 2000, and it shows the moment you try to pose it.
Best for: 0083 and Unicorn completionists who want the Tropen's screen-accurate desert colors on the shelf and don't mind an old-school build
What it is
I went into this one expecting a straightforward reissue and came out with a real appreciation for how much the Dom Tropen's design still holds up. The hover skirt, the bulky shoulder cannons, the sandy tan and burnt orange color scheme all read exactly like the Unicorn novel illustrations. The new hand parts sculpted specifically to grip a hand grenade are a nice touch, a small gesture that says the designers actually cared about recreating a specific moment rather than just recoloring old sprues. The pink foil sticker for the mono eye is a fun, correct detail too.
The catch
The catch is that this is a year 2000 mold wearing 2017 colors. The shoulders connect to the torso through a static plastic stub rather than a proper polycap joint, so lateral arm movement is minimal out of the box. The hips and feet are similarly stiff, there's no clear piece for the head visor, and the heat saber has no color separation so you're either leaving it flat gray or breaking out a paint pen. None of this is a surprise if you know your HGUC numbering, but if you're expecting Dom Tropen articulation on par with anything from the last decade, you'll be disappointed.
Who it's for
If you're building a Gundam 0083 or Unicorn shelf and want the Dom Tropen represented in its screen-accurate desert colors, this is the version to chase, and the grenade-holding hands make for a genuinely fun display pose straight out of the box. If articulation and modern engineering are what you're after, this isn't the kit, and you're better served picking up a cheaper standard-color Dom Tropen and doing your own paint job, or looking at a later-era HG entirely. Go in knowing you're buying a display piece with real charm, not a poseable action figure.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself is simple and fast by modern HG standards, since this is an early-2000s mold with a lower part count and less runner-clipping fuss than current kits. Gate placement is not going to win any awards, expect some visible nub marks on the rounder shoulder and hip pieces that take a bit more care to clean up than you'd expect from a kit this simple.
The standout piece of engineering here is honestly just the color molding, Bandai matched the sandy Unicorn palette closely enough that you can skip painting almost entirely and still get a screen-accurate result. Articulation is the tradeoff: the static shoulder stub and unswiveled hip joints mean big dynamic poses are out, and the mono-eye is a foil sticker rather than a paint app or clear part. The grenade-holding hands are really the one piece of new engineering in this reissue, and they deliver exactly what they promise.
Lore & trivia
- 01The MS-09F/trop Dom Tropen is a tropical and desert-warfare variant of the Dom line, built with modified intake filters and cooling for its hover-jet engines to operate in harsh terrestrial environments.
- 02It first appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, where Dom Tropen units took part in the theft of the RX-78GP02A Gundam 'Physalis' from Torrington Base.
- 03This Unicorn Ver. release recolors the original HGUC #017 Dom Tropen mold (first released in 2000) to match its updated appearance in the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn novel and OVA, and adds newly sculpted hands built to hold a hand grenade.
- 04The kit includes a foil sticker to recreate the mono eye's distinct pink glow as seen in the Unicorn adaptation.
