This is the HGUC Gelgoog formula turned up to eleven, and I had a great time with it.
It leans on the same well-proven Gelgoog frame that's been refined across a decade of releases, then buries you in new weapons and a genuinely cool active binder gimmick. It is not a kit that reinvents anything, but it takes a design I already trust and gives it real presence.
Best for: Zeon collectors who already like the Gelgoog line and want the biggest, most loaded version of it on the shelf
What it is
The Vertex is built on Anaheim Electronics' late-UC reimagining of the Gelgoog, the suit cooked up to answer Char's psycommu-driven Dijeh in the Johnny Ridden manga continuity. Structurally it is still a Gelgoog underneath, so the legs, waist, and core torso assemble the way they always have on this line, quick, satisfying, no surprises. What's new is the backpack. The old ReGelgu wing binders get grafted onto a fresh vernier-heavy back unit that can swing forward as an active shield, and building that subassembly was the best part of the kit for me. It clicks into a few clean poses and instantly changes the suit's silhouette from lean interceptor to gunship.
The catch
This is a P-Bandai exclusive, so you are paying premium pricing and buying direct or through a reseller markup, there is no walking into a shop for this one. The monoeye is sticker only with no clear part or foil trick, which is standard for HGUC Zeon kits of this vintage but still means no light-catching sparkle out of the box. The huge wing binder adds real weight to the backpack, and on my build the torso ball joint needed a firmer push-in than usual to keep the upper body from drooping backward once the binder was mounted. With a beam rifle, rocket launcher, mega gatling gun, beam naginata, and shield all in the box, you'll also spend real time sorting sprues before you even start clipping.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already like the Gelgoog silhouette and want the version with the most gun per gram, or if the active-binder gimmick on the back sounds fun to you, because it delivers there. Skip it if you want an easy first Zeon kit or you're put off by P-Bandai pricing and availability, since the standard HGUC Gelgoog or Gelgoog Jager gives you the same core frame for less money and no import hassle. This is a kit for someone building out a Gelgoog family shelf, not someone's first suit.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The main body goes together the way every HGUC Gelgoog has for years, snap-fit polycap joints in the hips and shoulders, gates on visible edges that need a light clip-and-sand pass if you want clean lines, and no real surprises in the legs or waist. Where the build gets interesting is the new backpack and binder assembly, which stacks several small vernier and hinge parts into a unit that folds and swings believably. It takes patience but rewards you with a working active-shield pose that the standard Gelgoog kits don't have.
Articulation carries over the Gelgoog line's real strength, deep hip and knee bend, a functional waist twist, and shoulders that lift well past horizontal even with the binder mounted, so it holds dynamic gun poses without much fuss. Color separation on the body is good for an HG, molded in the right greens and grays with only the usual small stickers for vents and sensors. The value case is the accessory loadout: five distinct weapon options plus the shield means you get a small armory's worth of posing choices without buying a second kit.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Gelgoog Vertex comes from MSV-R: The Return of Johnny Ridden, a manga/model line built around Zeon remnant Johnny Ridden's post-One Year War career.
- 02In its backstory the suit was developed by Anaheim Electronics' 2nd Research Division under Rimia Greenwood specifically to counter Char Aznable's psycommu-equipped Dijeh.
- 03Its shoulder wing binders are inherited from the MS-14J ReGelgu, repurposed here as an active binder for the new backpack booster unit.
- 04This HG released in June 2021 as a Premium Bandai exclusive under the HGUC line despite predating the RE/100 and other later re-releases of the base Gelgoog.
