The verdict

I came away from this one genuinely impressed by how much personality Bandai packed into a single HG.

The Gyan's silhouette has always been elegant, and the Hakuji white and gold recolor plus that absurd lance push it into standout territory for the GQuuuuuuX lineup. It is not a technical showpiece the way some HGs are, but it is a satisfying, characterful build with a real centerpiece accessory. For a suit built around one dramatic weapon, it delivers.

Best for: GQuuuuuuX fans and Zeon-suit lovers who want a striking display piece built around one huge signature weapon

The full review

What it is

This is the Hakuji-equipped version of Xavier Olivette's custom Gyan, done up in white and gold instead of the classic Zeon maroon, and it reads immediately as its own suit rather than a repaint. The build itself moved fast and stayed enjoyable the whole way through, snap-fit with no glue needed, and I did not fight the stickers nearly as much as I expected going in going by how other builders described the process too. The real event is the Hakuji lance itself, a genuinely oversized weapon with its own display stand, and clipping that into the Gyan's hand for the first time is the moment this kit earns its shelf space. The shield's opening missile hatch is a nice bonus gimmick on top.

The catch

This is still an HG, so expect the usual tradeoffs: some panel lines rely on the molded plastic rather than deep engraving, and color separation on smaller details leans on stickers rather than parts, which will bother anyone who insists on paint. The mono-eye only swivels once you pop the upper head piece off, which is a fiddly extra step rather than a smooth built-in gimmick. And the Hakuji lance, for all its presence, is a single dedicated pose piece: it looks fantastic mounted or held forward, but it is not something you casually swap in and out of varied action poses without the stand doing a lot of the work.

Who it's for

Grab this one if you want a Gyan that actually looks like a specific character's machine rather than a generic recolor, or if you are collecting the GQuuuuuuX HG line and want the entry with the most dramatic accessory. It is also a genuinely fun, low-stress weekend build if you want something snap-fit that still rewards you with a real centerpiece at the end. Skip it if you need MG-level frame engineering or paint-free color separation on every panel, this kit spends its budget on the spear and the silhouette, not on inner-frame complexity.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Assembly is straightforward snap-fit with no glue required, and the runners are laid out sensibly enough that gate marks land in low-visibility spots on most of the armor. Builders who went in braced for heavy sticker work came out saying it was less of a pain than expected, which tracks with how the kit handles color separation on the white and gold Hakuji scheme.

Engineering-wise this stays true to Gyan's classic proportions while updating the joints: elbows bend to roughly 140 degrees and the wrists are double-jointed, so two-handed lance poses and angled sword grips both work without looking stiff. The shield's opening missile hatch is a small but satisfying gimmick, and the giant Hakuji lance ships with its own stand so you can rest the suit against or behind it for a dramatic display setup rather than just holding it out at arm's length.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Gyan line (MS-14/15 series) originated as a Principality of Zeon mobile suit in the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, and this HGGQ release reimagines that classic frame for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
  • 02In the series, Xavier Olivette pilots this custom white and gold Gyan to protect Kycilia Zabi from an assassination attempt carried out by Deux Murasame in the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam.
  • 03The Hakuji weapon is a composite design, a giant physical lance fitted with its own rear thrusters that also houses a beam rifle built into its tip.
  • 04The kit is numbered HGGQ #07 in Bandai's Gundam GQuuuuuuX High Grade line and released in 2025.
