The verdict

This is one of the best HG kits Bandai has put out, full stop.

I went in expecting a quick weeknight build and came out with a shelf piece that poses like something twice its grade and price. The joint work is the star here, and the accessory loadout is genuinely excessive in the best way. If you have any love for Zeon designs, this kit earns it.

Best for: Gunpla fans who want MG-level pose range and weapon variety without leaving the HG price band

The full review

What it is

The Sinanju Stein is the salvaged, battle-worn cousin of the original gold Sinanju, rebuilt by Zeon remnants and handed to Zoltan Akkanen in Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. In HG form it captures that rebuilt, mismatched-parts feel with a mostly white and gunmetal frame under red and gold trim, and it just works as a piece of design. Building it, I kept noticing how much thought went into a kit at this price point, the sculpting on the chest and forearms reads as genuinely detailed rather than suggested, and the whole thing snaps together with a level of confidence I don't expect from a 1/144 HG.

The catch

Bandai split some of the wrist and sleeve detailing into two-piece assemblies instead of molding them whole, so there is a bit more part-hunting during construction than a kit this size usually asks for. Some of the finer engraved detail on the chest and forearms leans on foil stickers rather than molded color, so careful application matters if you want the sharpest look. It is still an HG, so do not expect the panel lining or inner-frame depth of an MG version of the same suit, and a couple of areas feel intentionally simplified to hit the price.

Who it's for

Grab this if you want a genuinely great-posing Zeon suit without stepping up to MG money, or if you are a Narrative fan who wants Zoltan's ride on the shelf. It is also a strong pick for anyone building a Sinanju collection alongside the original gold version, since the contrast in finish tells a story on its own. Skip it only if you specifically want the deepest possible detail and are prepared to pay MG prices instead, since the Ver.Ka MG covers that ground. For everyone else in the HG price band, this is close to a must-build.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Gate placement is considerate and cleanup is painless for a kit with this much surface detail, and the fit between panels is tight enough that I did not feel like I needed glue anywhere. The main hiccup is the two-piece wrist sleeves, which take a little extra patience to align cleanly, but nothing that trips up an intermediate builder.

The articulation is where this kit separates itself from typical HGs. The head runs on a ball joint with an added tilt hinge, the waist rotates a full 360 degrees, elbows bend past 110 degrees, and knees bend to about 120, which together let it hold genuinely aggressive combat poses. Add in ball-jointed propellant tanks and a weapons loadout that includes a retooled beam rifle, a bazooka with interchangeable barrel lengths, twin beam sabers, a grenade launcher, and a shield, and the part-count value at this price band is excellent.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Sinanju Stein is a salvaged and rebuilt version of the original MSN-06S Sinanju, reconstructed by Zeon remnants after the original suit was heavily damaged.
  • 02It is piloted by Zoltan Akkanen in Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, a Cyber Newtype created from the same project that produced Full Frontal, but considered a failed result, which fuels his obsession with proving himself.
  • 03The kit's beam rifle is a retooled variant of the original Sinanju's beam rifle rather than an all-new sculpt.
  • 04This HG released in October 2018 alongside the Narrative film, giving builders an affordable way into the design before the more premium MG Ver.Ka version arrived a few months later.
