This P-Bandai HG takes the Narrative version's excellent frame and reruns it in the original crimson and gold Ver.Ka colors with the high beam rifle, and the result is one of the better HGs Bandai has put out for this suit line.
I built it expecting a quick weeknight kit and ended up spending two evenings on it because the posing kept pulling me back in. It is not a technical showcase the way the MG is, but for a 1/144 it punches well above its price.
Best for: Sinanju fans who want the Ver.Ka look on a shelf without building the MG, and HG builders who want serious articulation for cheap
What it is
This is the Unicorn Ver. recolor of the HGUC Sinanju Stein, built off the same runners as the Narrative release but stripped of the Sleeves unit markings and painted out in the deep red and gold scheme fans know from the Ver.Ka master grade. I went in thinking it would be a straightforward P-Bandai reissue and came away impressed by how much presence it has on the shelf. The gold trim reads as gold molded plastic, not a sticker sheet doing the heavy lifting, and the overall silhouette (that long, evil looking head crest, the bulky shoulders) sells the character even at this scale.
The catch
It was a P-Bandai webshop exclusive, so if you missed the 2019 run you are hunting aftermarket listings and paying more than the original 2,600 yen price. The elbow joints are stiff enough that racking the huge beam rifle two-handed takes some patience, and a couple of the smaller gold accent pieces still lean on stickers rather than molded color, so cleanup and careful application matter if you want it shelf-clean. It also shares its frame with an older HG tool, so the parts fit is good but not MG-tier precise in a couple of the joints.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already love the Sinanju Stein design and want the Ver.Ka colorway without committing to the Master Grade's build time and price, or if you just want a genuinely fun-posing HG for around the same shelf space as a standard 1/144. Skip it if you specifically want the Narrative unit markings, since this version removes them, or if you are dead set on zero stickers anywhere on the kit. For most Gunpla builders looking for a characterful HG with real articulation, this is an easy recommend.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build moves fast for an HG, mostly snap-fit with clean part fit throughout, though a couple of the smaller shoulder and skirt pieces need care during gate removal since the runners are shared with an earlier HG tool rather than freshly engineered for this release. Nothing here fights you, it just rewards a little patience on the fiddlier joints.
The frame is where this kit earns its score: hip and shoulder joints let the legs kick out wide and the arms swing well past neutral, and the knees bend far enough for a proper crouch. Weapon loadout is the other highlight, the bazooka's long and short barrels can combine onto the beam rifle the way they do in the source material, and the extra pair of hands means you are not stuck with one open-palm pose for the whole display.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Sinanju Stein started life as an Anaheim Electronics prototype for the Federation's UC Project before it was stolen and reworked by the Neo Zeon remnant group known as the Sleeves.
- 02Its movable frame is partly built from Psycho-Frame material, tying it to the same Newtype-amplifying technology used in the Unicorn and Banshee Gundams.
- 03This Unicorn Ver. release swaps out the Sleeves unit markings from the Narrative version and returns the color scheme to the original crimson and gold Ver.Ka look, paired with the high beam rifle instead of the Narrative loadout.
- 04A second Sinanju Stein exists in the Universal Century timeline, its role kept secret until the Gundam Narrative novel and film revealed it was piloted by Zoltan Akkanen.
