The verdict

This is one of the best surprises in the HGCE Freedom lineup, and I did not expect that walking in.

The gold metallic-gloss injection on the shoulder and chest armor actually reads as gold on the shelf, not the usual flat mustard plastic HG lines settle for. Add the PET sheet wing effect and the SEED Action System underneath, and you get a kit that poses harder and looks richer than its price band suggests. It is not without a real weak point, but the whole package earns its spot on a shelf next to bigger, pricier kits.

Best for: HG collectors who want a Freedom-era side character kit that photographs like a display piece without an MG price tag

The full review

What it is

The Cal-re.A is Orphee and Ingrid's dual-seat mobile suit from the very end of SEED Freedom, and Bandai gave it the full HGCE treatment rather than a rushed movie tie-in mold. The SEED Action System frame underneath means the hips, shoulders, and knees have real travel, so the dynamic sword-swinging poses from the film are actually reachable on the shelf, not just implied by the box art. The two AMS enhanced swords store cleanly on the side skirts when not in use, which is a small detail that makes the silhouette read correctly at rest instead of looking like it forgot its gear. Building it felt more considered than most kits at this price point.

The catch

The two swords are the one part I would treat carefully. Builders and reviewers flag them as thin and brittle right out of the runner, and if you are heavy handed with gate cleanup or repeated posing, expect stress marks or a snap. The wings of light effect relies on a printed PET sheet rather than an assembled part, so it is a nice bonus but it is a decal-adjacent solution, not injection-molded detail, and it will not hold up to constant handling the way plastic does. Some panel lines and the smaller Dragoon-adjacent beam effect parts (16 of them) are fiddly at 1/144 and reward a steady hand and a hobby knife over rushing straight off the runner.

Who it's for

If you followed SEED Freedom and want Orphee and Ingrid's suit on the shelf without stepping up to an MG price, this is an easy recommendation, the gold trim alone makes it stand out next to plainer HG entries. It also works well for anyone who wants a taste of the SEED Action System's pose range before committing to a bigger kit in the same line. Skip it if you handle your swords a lot when posing, since the brittleness is a known and repeated complaint, and go in planning to store the blades carefully rather than swap them in and out constantly.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Runner cleanup is standard HG fare with one exception, the sword pieces are noticeably thinner than the rest of the kit, so I slowed down on nub removal there specifically rather than treating them like the rest of the sprue. The dual-seat cockpit detail and side-skirt sword storage both assemble cleanly and click into place with satisfying certainty, nothing loose or vague about the fit.

The SEED Action System underneath is the real engineering story here, it gives the hips and shoulders enough range to actually hit the sword-swinging poses from the film's final act, which most HGs in this price band cannot claim. The gold metallic gloss injection covers the shoulder and chest armor without needing a topcoat to read as premium, and the backpack deployment parts plus PET wing sheet turn a fairly plain-profile suit into something with real presence once posed open.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Cal-re.A first appears at the very end of the theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, piloted by Orphee Lam Tao with Ingrid Tradoll handling fire control from the rear seat.
  • 02It was developed independently by the Kingdom of Foundation using PLANT technology and is built around a new-generation armor type called Femto Technology (FT) Armor.
  • 03Its primary weapons are a pair of compact AMS enhanced swords, smaller than the AMS heavy blades carried by the Rud-ro.A, plus an OWC-M1R1/F high-energy beam rifle as its ranged option.
  • 04The kit ships with 16 beam effect parts for its Dragoon-adjacent armament alongside the beam rifle, two swords, a PET wing sheet, and backpack deployment parts.
