OZ-06MS Leo (Space Type)
The grunt suit gets a purple paint job, a small arsenal, and elbows that actually hold a pose.

This is what a background mobile suit kit should feel like when Bandai actually tries.
I went in expecting a reskin and came out with the best-articulated cheap Leo variant I have built. It is not going to wow anyone on shelf presence, but the joint engineering and the sheer pile of weapons you get for the price make it a legitimately fun build. This is a Gunpla Evolution Project kit, and you can feel the experimentation paying off in the knees and elbows specifically.
Best for: OZ mob-suit collectors and Wing fans who want a P-Bandai Leo variant with real pose range, not just a recolor
What it is
The Space Type takes the standard HGAC Leo mold, swaps the familiar olive green for a deep purple, and loads the box with hardpoint weapons: a machine gun, shield, twin beam sabers, a bazooka, two beam rifles, and a pistol. It comes from the Gunpla Evolution Project, Bandai's mid-2010s push to rethink how HG runners and joints go together, and it shows. The knee and elbow joints bend further and hold tighter than I expect from a budget 1/144 grunt suit. Building it felt less like assembling filler and more like getting a genuinely engineered little kit that happens to depict the mook of the show.
The catch
The ankle ball joints pop off if you look at them wrong, which gets old fast when you are trying to lock in a dynamic stance. The neck has zero articulation, none, so every head tilt you want has to come from the torso or waist instead. Stickers are minimal (mostly just the face visor), which is a plus for build feel but means you are relying on molded color everywhere else. It is also a P-Bandai exclusive from 2018, so actually finding one at a fair price years later is its own project.
Who it's for
If you like Gundam Wing's OZ faction, or you just want a cheap kit with a genuinely surprising range of motion, the Leo Space Type earns its spot on the shelf. The weapon loadout alone makes it a fun diorama piece next to a squad of stock Leos. Skip it if you need display-piece detail or a big panel-lined shelf presence, this is still a simple HG at heart. Skip it too if the ankle looseness would bother you more than the elbow articulation delights you, that tradeoff is the whole personality of this kit.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
This is a straightforward HG build, five runners, no inner frame, but the Gunpla Evolution Project parts layout makes gate cleanup easy and the fit is snug without being a fight. Nubs clean up fast and nothing felt fragile going together.
The standout is the GEP joint work: the waist ball-joints let the torso tilt front, back, and sideways, the waist rotates a full 360, and the elbows reportedly bend past 140 degrees, deep enough to hold aggressive gun poses. Shoulder hardpoints and back hardpoints exist specifically so the Leo line can swap loadouts, and this release stuffs nearly every option into one box.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Leo was OZ's first mass-produced mobile suit, a simplified, easier-to-pilot version of the OZ-00MS Tallgeese meant for average soldiers rather than aces
- 02OZ named its mobile suits after zodiac signs, which is where Leo gets its name
- 03The Leo's shoulder and back hardpoints are canon in-universe, letting the same frame mount different weapons and backpacks like the Flight Unit seen on the High Mobility Type
- 04This Space Type release was a Bandai Hobby Online Shop (P-Bandai) exclusive from 2018, built on the Gunpla Evolution Project runner and joint redesign
