RGM-79 Sayla's Light-Type Guncannon

A mass-production frame wearing a personal machine's colors, and it moves better than a Guncannon has any right to.

The verdict

This is one of the better small HG kits Bandai has put out this year, and I say that as someone who went in expecting a reskin.

The tri-color scheme actually reads as intentional rather than a paint-swap gimmick, the articulation is genuinely full range for a compact artillery suit, and the shoulder cannon still feels like the character piece it is. My honest caveat is that it is a P-Bandai exclusive at heart, so you are paying convention-adjacent prices for what is, mechanically, a 2,000 yen HG.

Best for: UC lore fans and GQuuuuuuX watchers who want Sayla's Light Cannon on the shelf without hunting down an MG

The full review

What it is

This kit takes the familiar Guncannon silhouette and reworks it into something lighter on its feet. The frame borrows design language from three classic UC suits, the RGM-79's serial number plate, the RGC-80 GM Cannon's offset single shoulder cannon, and the mass-production philosophy of the RX-77D, then wraps all of it in Sayla Mass's white, blue, and red personal paint job. Building it, I kept noticing how much the streamlined armor panels let the double-jointed knees and elbows do actual work instead of just looking articulated on the box art. It feels like Bandai took a HG GQuuuuuuX engineering pass and applied it properly instead of phoning it in.

The catch

Being a Bandai Hobby Online Shop exclusive, this is not a kit you grab off a Target shelf, and the price reflects that premium positioning even though the plastic and engineering underneath are standard HG fare. Color separation is solid for the main body, but expect to lean on the included stickers and a bit of panel lining if you want the trim colors to really pop, the molded plastic alone leaves some detail flat. The shoulder cannon only articulates on one axis, so dynamic overhead poses take some creative wrist work with the beam rifle instead.

Who it's for

If you care about Universal Character era Gunpla, Guncannon variants specifically, or the GQuuuuuuX series, this is worth tracking down. The build is Skill Level 2, no cement needed, and rewarding enough for a weekend afternoon without punishing a newer builder. If you only buy kits for maximum posability out of the box or refuse to pay P-Bandai markup on principle, skip it and wait for a general retail Guncannon release instead, you will not miss much you cannot get elsewhere for less.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The build moves fast. Runner-to-parts ratio is friendly, gate placement is mostly on non-visible seams, and nothing here demands more than basic nub cleanup with a side cutter. The torso and hip block go together in the usual HG modular style, and the double-jointed knee assembly is the standout moment of the build, it snaps together in two pieces but immediately swings through a deep bend that most HGs from a few years back could not manage.

Where the kit earns its keep is articulation: ball-jointed neck and torso, swinging shoulders, ball-jointed arms that raise to full horizontal, swivel forearms, and ankles that pivot and tilt independently. Combined with the thigh swivel, you can get real dynamic ground poses out of it. The loadout is light, a beam rifle, beam saber, and the signature shoulder beam cannon, plus a spare set of hands, so do not expect an accessory-stuffed box, but everything included matches what Sayla's Light Cannon actually carries on screen.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The kit depicts Sayla Mass's personal machine from Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, first shown publicly at the 63rd Shizuoka Hobby Show in May 2025 ahead of its P-Bandai release.
  • 02Its design deliberately splices together three classic Universal Century suits: it carries the RGM-79 GM's serial number, the RGC-80 GM Cannon's single offset shoulder cannon mount, and the mass-production concept behind the RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type.
  • 03Unlike the standard red Guncannon color scheme, Sayla's unit is finished in a white, blue, and red tricolor scheme unique to her personal Light Cannon.
  • 04In the GQuuuuuuX storyline, this Light Cannon is credited with a decisive strike against Zeon forces during the First Battle of Solomon.
