This is the 2010 HGUC Jegan mold wearing a new coat of paint, and I think that is exactly what it should be.
The blue chest and cowl molded in place of the usual federation gray genuinely change how the kit reads on the shelf, but the frame underneath, the articulation, the accessory count, none of that moved an inch. If you already like the base Jegan you will like this. If you were hoping for retooled parts to justify the exclusive price and Side-F trip, you will not find them here.
Best for: Char's Counterattack and Gundam Legacy fans who want Yuu Kajima's Jegan specifically, plus builders who already enjoy the standard HGUC Jegan sculpt
What it is
Underneath the branding this is the same HGUC #097 Jegan that Bandai first released back in 2010, run again in 2022 as a Gundam Base and Side-F exclusive with the torso and chest cowl molded in Yuu Kajima's signature blue instead of federation gray. The rest of the kit builds exactly like the original: ball-jointed head, a waist that spins the full 360 degrees, ABS elbow joints that actually hold weight, and shoulders on a slide mechanism that swing forward and back for a wider guard stance. It comes with a beam rifle, shield, and beam saber in both long and short blade lengths, plus a trigger-finger hand for the rifle and an open hand for gesture poses. Building it felt like catching up with an old, dependable kit rather than meeting something new.
The catch
The honest problem is that you are paying exclusive prices for a repaint. The tooling, part count, and accessory loadout are unchanged from a kit that is now well over a decade old, so there is no new engineering here, no extra runners, no bonus parts. It was sold only through Gundam Base Tokyo, Gundam Base Fukuoka, and the Side-F web store, so getting one outside Japan usually means paying a reseller markup on top of the original 1,980 yen price. Because the blue color is molded rather than airbrushed, panel lines on the flat blue chest plate read a little soft until you add your own wash, and there is no sticker sheet doing any heavy lifting since the scheme relies on the plastic colors themselves.
Who it's for
Grab this one if the character matters to you: Yuu Kajima's Jegan is a recognizable unit from Gundam Legacy and the Pulitzer manga, tied to the push on Axis, and having that specific color scheme on the shelf next to your ν Gundam or Hi-Nu is worth the hunt for a lot of UC collectors. Skip it if you are shopping purely on engineering merit or value per part, because the plain gray HGUC Jegan gets you the identical build experience for a fraction of the cost. New builders looking for their first mobile suit kit should start with the standard release and save this one for after they already know they like the sculpt.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself is straightforward HGUC-era assembly. Gates are placed where you would expect on a 2010s Bandai mold, cleanup is quick, and nothing on the runners fights you. The ABS elbow joints are the standout during construction because they lock in tight and do not loosen up the way some all-PS joints do after a few pose changes, which matters given how often a Jegan ends up posed mid-swing with that beam saber.
Where the kit earns its keep is the shoulder slide mechanism, letting the arms push forward for a guard stance or pull back for a wider swing, something plenty of same-era HG kits skip entirely. The loadout of beam rifle, shield, and both saber blade lengths covers the suit's actual armament without feeling padded, and the trigger-finger hand plus separate gesture hand cover the two poses you will actually use most. For the part count and price band, it is a fair trade even before you factor in the exclusive color.
