The verdict

This is the familiar HGUC Unicorn Destroy Mode sculpt wearing a nicer coat, and that is exactly what it is selling.

The blue clear psycho frame runner is the whole reason to want this version over the standard release, and it does make the horns, chest vents, and joints pop in a way plain white plastic never could. Underneath that, it is still a 2010s-era HG build with the same stiff knees and thin panel lining that the original kit always had.

Best for: Unicorn fans who already know the mold and specifically want the clear-frame Gundam Base version on the shelf next to their standard Destroy Mode

The full review

What it is

Snapping this together felt like meeting an old friend in a new outfit. The core engineering is the classic HGUC Unicorn Destroy Mode, so the V-fin flip gimmick still works with a satisfying click, the chest opens to show the psycho frame, and the silhouette is still one of the best HG Gundam designs Bandai has ever put out. What changes here is the runner of translucent blue plastic standing in for the usual white psycho frame pieces, plus the accessory loadout pulled from the Perfectibility line, including the Hyper Beam Javelin and a stack of Armed Armor units. Building it, I kept catching the light hitting that blue frame and thinking it was worth the extra part count over the plain version.

The catch

The bones of this kit are over a decade old and it shows the moment you start posing it. The double-jointed knees still cap out around ninety degrees, which is the same complaint people had about the original Destroy Mode release and the MG before it, so dynamic lunging poses need a stand. Sticker count is minimal, just a small foil sheet, and the white bodywork has very little molded panel detail, so it reads flat out of the box unless you commit to panel lining it yourself. As a Gundam Base exclusive it also runs well above a standard HG price for what is, mechanically, the same kit as before.

Who it's for

I would point this at builders who already love the Unicorn Destroy Mode silhouette and want the clear blue frame variant specifically, or collectors chasing the Perfectibility weapon loadout to pair with other RX-0 kits on the shelf. If you have never built the standard HGUC Destroy Mode and just want a great HG Unicorn, buy that version first and save the money, because the engineering underneath is identical and the plain psycho frame is honestly still striking under a light. Skip this one if action posing matters more to you than shelf presence, since the knee range has not improved with age.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Gate placement follows the original HGUC Destroy Mode tooling, so nub marks land in mostly hidden spots on the limbs, though the chest psycho frame pieces need careful clipping since the blue clear plastic shows every stray nub under light. Fit is snug rather than loose, and the thumb pegs on the hand parts are reported as fragile if you pull them apart with too much force, so I went slow there and had no issues.

The standout here is entirely the color separation on the psycho frame parts, since translucent blue reads far better than the standard white when the chest panels are open. Weapon loadout is generous for an HG price point (even at the exclusive markup), covering the Beam Magnum, Hyper Bazooka, Hyper Beam Javelin, and the BS, VN, XC, and DE Armed Armor units, so there is no shortage of ways to pose it once it is built.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Unicorn Gundam's psycho frame lights up gold when the pilot's Newtype abilities awaken, which is what the transformation into Destroy Mode represents in the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn story.
  • 02This Perfectibility version was sold as a Gundam Base exclusive, part of Bandai's limited lineup only available through Gundam Base stores and their online shop rather than general retail.
  • 03The clear blue parts on this release let builders swap in a deactivated look using the same runner, since the transparent psycho frame pieces can represent the suit before its Newtype Destroy Mode is triggered.
