The verdict

This is a kit that wins the shelf and loses a little on the bench.

Bandai gave the Norn upgrade a full set of clear orange psycho-frame parts and the new Armed Armor DE, and when it's locked into Destroy Mode with that frame lit up under the black shell, it looks like nothing else in the HGUC line at this price. The catch is that the joints holding all that drama up are noticeably weaker than they should be, so the display presence outruns the poseability.

Best for: Unicorn Gundam fans who want the Norn's black-and-gold Destroy Mode look on a shelf more than they want a kit that holds dynamic poses all day

The full review

What it is

This is the Banshee Norn version of the HGUC Unicorn 02 Destroy Mode kit, built around the same clear-orange psycho-frame idea that made the original Unicorn kits special, but recolored for Riddhe's black unit with its lion-inspired horn and gold collar. Snapping the destroyed shell over that glowing frame is genuinely satisfying, and Bandai included enough leftover runners to also assemble the standard Unicorn Shield in its Destroy configuration with the clear X psycho-frame showing through. Color separation across the black, gold, and clear orange is handled well straight off the runners, which is not something I take for granted at HG price points.

The catch

The joints are the real weak point here. The knees, ankles, and elbows all feel softer than I want them to, the arm joints in particular tend to work loose during posing, and without an action base you are mostly limited to standing shots rather than anything dynamic. There are also a lot of gold stickers involved in getting the trim details right, and plain stickers on a kit this show-off tend to age worse than paint. Nub placement is unkind in a couple of spots, most annoyingly a nub scar tucked right on the v-fin where it is easy to miss during cleanup and hard to hide afterward.

Who it's for

I'd point this at builders who already love the Unicorn 02 Banshee Norn and want that black Destroy Mode silhouette with the lit psycho-frame on display, and who are fine posturing it in a mostly static, dramatic stance rather than chasing full battle poses. If you want a kit that holds an aggressive lunge unaided, budget for an action base from the start. If loose joints and sticker maintenance are dealbreakers for you, it is worth stepping up to the Master Grade version of this suit instead, where the frame is more solid.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Assembly is straightforward HGUC snap-fit, but there are a lot of small parts going into the torso and skirt armor, so it pays to keep track of pieces as you go. Nub cleanup takes real time on this one, gate placement is not always kind, and the v-fin in particular hides a nub scar that is easy to miss on the first pass and annoying to clean up once the part is assembled.

The upper thighs use a ball-and-socket swivel and the ankles tilt front-to-back and side-to-side, so the range is there on paper. In practice the joint tension does not match the range, and the arms especially loosen with repeated posing. Where the kit earns its keep is the frame reveal: the translucent psycho-frame parts under the black Destroy Mode shell, plus the included Armed Armor DE and the option to build the Unicorn Shield's Destroy configuration, give this kit a part-count and display value well above a typical HG.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Banshee's styling is deliberately built around a lion rather than the unicorn theme of RX-0 Unit 01, shown through the gold forehead crest, the gold mane-like collar, and a more elaborate stylized horn.
  • 02Unit 02 Banshee was developed using operational feedback from Unit 01 and, despite lacking Unit 01's La+ System, performs notably better in atmospheric combat.
  • 03The Norn upgrade added Armed Armor XC and Armed Armor DE, strengthening the pilot's psycho-wave affinity enough that Riddhe Marcenas, despite weaker Newtype ability, could still trigger NT-D Destroy Mode.
