The verdict

This is the RX-78-2 formula with a fresh coat of paint and a genuinely fun gimmick weapon, and it earns its spot as one of the better P-Bandai exclusive HGUCs.

The mega beam launcher is the reason to want this kit, it is oversized, it looks properly dangerous in the hand, and the lore behind it (it is so powerful it kills its own pilot on use) gives the accessory real weight. It is not reinventing anything mechanically, but what is here is solid, cleanly engineered, and priced fairly for what you get.

Best for: UC completionists and RX-78-2 fans who want a variant with a genuinely cool signature weapon instead of another straight reissue

The full review

What it is

The G04 is one of the RX-78 series prototypes converted for space combat ahead of the Solomon and A Baoa Qu operations, and the HG kit leans hard into that identity. It shares its skeleton with the familiar HGUC Gundam body, so the shoulders, waist, and legs snap together the way you would expect if you have built any RX-78 variant before, but the parts that make it distinct, the [Bst] booster backpack, the hyper beam rifle, and especially the mega beam launcher, are all new molds and they are the best part of the box. Building it felt like getting a familiar frame with a genuinely exciting new toy bolted onto it.

The catch

The sticker sheet is smaller than the amount of color separation the kit actually needs, so you are looking at panel lines, vents, and unit markings that come down to stickers or a marker/paint session if you want it screen accurate. That is a real time cost on a kit that otherwise builds fast. The mega beam launcher and booster pack also add bulk and weight to the back, which shows up as some sag in extended poses if the waist and hip joints haven't broken in yet. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it pushes the kit from a pure weekend snap-build into something that rewards a little extra effort.

Who it's for

If you already have an RX-78-2 on the shelf and want a variant that actually changes the silhouette and the loadout rather than just the color scheme, this is worth tracking down. It is also a solid pick if the mega beam launcher gimmick appeals to you on its own, the accessory alone makes for a striking display piece even without extra weathering. Skip it if you specifically want a kit that looks fully painted straight out of the box with zero touch-up, since the sticker gap will bother you. New builders looking for their very first kit should start with a plainer HG and come back to G04 once they are comfortable with detail painting.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

The core body goes together the way any RX-78 HGUC does, which means fast, clean gate placement and no real surprises in fit if you have built the base Gundam before. The new-mold parts, booster backpack, hyper beam rifle, and mega beam launcher, are where the attention clearly went, and they clip in cleanly with none of the looseness that sometimes shows up on kits padding out a variant with reused runners.

Articulation matches the standard RX-78 HGUC playbook: double ball-jointed neck, forward-swinging shoulders, double-jointed elbows and knees, rotating forearms, and a full 360-degree waist. It holds a rifle-aiming pose fine and the skirt armor pivots out of the way of the legs, so kneeling poses are achievable. The mega beam launcher is genuinely the part-count and value standout here, it is a big, satisfying accessory that most base HGUC Gundam kits do not include.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The RX-78-4 was one of several RX-78 units (alongside G03, G05, and others) converted from ground-combat prototypes into space-combat configurations ahead of the Solomon and A Baoa Qu operations.
  • 02In the lore, the mega beam launcher was used only once. It destroyed a Zeon reinforcement fleet from Granada, but the strain on the additional energy pack caused an explosion that killed the pilot, Luce Cassel, in the original account.
  • 03In the video game Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, achieving an A rank or higher on the mission to protect G04 lets Luce Cassel survive the explosion with only minor injuries, an alternate outcome to the mobile suit's original tragic backstory.
  • 04The HG version of G04 was released in May 2020 as a Bandai Hobby Online Shop (P-Bandai) exclusive, following an earlier Master Grade release of the same unit.
