I'll say it plainly, this is not a Gundam, it is a weapon, and once I stopped judging it like a mobile suit kit it clicked into place as one of the more clever cheap add-ons Bandai has put out.
You get a beam blaster, a cannon part, and a blade part built around a working gear that lets the whole thing fold and rotate into four different loadouts. For the price of a coffee it gives any HG in my display case a reason to look busy.
Best for: HG collectors who want a cheap, fiddly gear-toy to arm up an existing kit rather than build a whole new suit
What it is
The Spinning Blaster is part of the HGBC (HG Build Custom) weapons line, the same family of parts packs that let Build Fighters and Build Divers characters mix and match hardware onto stock HG frames. Inside are three short runners that snap together into a central gear housing, and turning that gear physically reconfigures the blaster between a compact gun, an extended cannon, and a bladed melee form. It is a genuinely satisfying little mechanism to fidget with on its own, gears meshing and parts swinging out with a clean click, and it plugs onto standard HG 5mm grips and joints without any adapter headaches.
The catch
It is tiny and it is plastic, so the gear teeth feel like something to be gentle with rather than crank on repeatedly, and a couple of the smaller connector pegs are the kind of parts that vanish under a cutting mat if you are not careful. There is no color separation to speak of since the runners come in one or two base colors and the whole point is a monochrome weapon, so if you want it to pop you are picking up a paint pen. It also does nothing by itself, this is strictly an accessory for a suit you already own or are about to build, and the box art oversells how imposing it looks in hand.
Who it's for
If you already have a shelf of HG kits and want a cheap way to make one of them look freshly loaded out for a diorama or a custom build, this is an easy pickup, it is inexpensive, quick to assemble in under twenty minutes, and the transforming gimmick is more fun than a weapon part has any right to be. Skip it if you are shopping for your first kit or want something that stands on its own, this only makes sense as a supporting piece, not a centerpiece.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly is closer to snapping together a small mechanical toy than building a mobile suit. Three runners, minimal gate cleanup since the parts are chunky by HG standards, and the trickiest bit is seating the gear axle so it turns smoothly instead of binding. No stickers, no decals, just clip and go.
The engineering is the whole draw here, that single gear drives the transformation between blaster, cannon, and blade configurations, and it holds each shape firmly enough to survive being posed and handled. Value is solid for the asking price given how much fidget-factor you get from three runners, but there are no extra accessories beyond the weapon itself, so treat it purely as an add-on line item rather than a kit in its own right.
Lore & trivia
- 01The HGBC (HG Build Custom) line exists specifically to let Gunpla builders bolt extra weapons and parts onto stock HG mobile suits, spanning the Gundam Build Fighters, Build Divers, and Build Metaverse anime.
- 02Spinning Blaster carries catalog number 038 in the Build Custom weapons series and includes a beam blaster, a cannon part, and a blade part on its runners.
- 03It first released in mid-2018 with an original retail price of 648 yen, making it one of the more affordable entries in the customization parts catalog.
- 04The kit's core gimmick, a manually turned gear that reshapes the weapon, lets builders display it in four distinct configurations without any extra tools.
