The Gaeon is a kit you buy for one part of its body and end up loving for the same reason.
That giant hand-shaped Big Arm Unit on its back is genuinely one of the best posing gimmicks I have handled in a 1,800 yen kit, full stop. The suit under it is fairly ordinary, but the backpack does so much heavy lifting that I never once felt shortchanged. This is a niche pick that rewards anyone willing to look past the low profile of Reconguista in G itself.
Best for: Reconguista in G completionists and gimmick hunters who want a display piece with a genuinely different backpack, not another straight-arm HG
What it is
Gaeon is the mobile suit piloted by Kia Mbeki, director of Venus Globe's G-IT Laboratory, and it shows up in Reconguista in G as one of the odder-looking machines in a series full of odd machines. The HG interprets that oddness through the Big Arm Unit, an oversized hand-shaped pack with multi-stage wrist extension and individually articulated fingers. Building it, I kept finding new ways to pose that thing: fanned out like a peacock, curled into a fist, folded flat as a shield in front of the torso. The dual-tone purple plastic gives you real color separation on the body without needing much paint, and the single foil sticker sheet is there for detail accents rather than covering gaps.
The catch
The core body is the plain half of this kit. Torso, legs, and head articulation are described accurately as ordinary for a 2015 HG, nothing close to the range the backpack gives you, so if you were hoping the whole suit would match the Big Arm Unit's flair you will be a little let down. It is also a deep-cut kit tied to a show that never broke out commercially, so parts availability and secondhand pricing can be inconsistent years later, and English-language build coverage is thin compared to mainline HGUC releases. Eight beam saber effect parts fill out the fingertips nicely, but they are the kind of small clear-ish pieces that are easy to lose during a build session.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already like Reconguista in G, or if you specifically want a kit whose defining feature is an unconventional backpack gimmick rather than a conventional Gundam silhouette. It is also a fun one for builders who enjoy finding a kit's one great idea and running with it in photos. Skip it if you want a kit that is impressive from every angle including the base body, or if you are chasing the show's title mecha, the G-Self, instead. As a secondary or display-shelf piece next to bigger names, Gaeon earns its spot.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Across 11 runners this goes together like a standard mid-2010s HG: light nub marks, straightforward gate placement, and no unusual clip-in stress on the frame. The body sections snap together without drama, and the single foil sticker sheet is used for accent details rather than papering over unpainted plastic, so the finished suit reads clean even straight off the runners.
The real engineering is in that backpack. Multi-stage wrist extension plus individually articulated finger joints give the Big Arm Unit a working range that holds its pose at nearly any angle, which is rare for a part this large on an HG frame. Slot in the included beam rifle and the eight beam saber effect pieces across the fingertips and you get shooting-diorama poses that most kits in this price band can't touch, all while the fingers can still fold flat into a defensive shield stance.
