This is the most anime-accurate cheap fun you can have with a 1/144 kit from this line.
The chest gatling doors flip open, the shoulder missile bay pops, the leg micro missiles deploy, and none of it feels like a compromise, it feels like the toy the show always wanted you to have. The color separation has some real gaps and the accessory count is thin, but the core gimmick execution is what sells this one.
Best for: Gundam Wing fans building out the five Gundam pilots who want the gimmicks over the accessories
What it is
Heavyarms is the walking weapons platform of the Wing cast, and this HGAC nails that identity in a way plenty of pricier kits fumble. Both chest panels swing open to show the gatling gun innards, the shoulder houses a real missile bay, and the legs pop open for the micro missile spread, all without feeling like stiff add-on parts. Building it is quick and low stress, which is exactly the point of this line. I went in expecting a plain reissue and came out surprised at how much personality Bandai squeezed into a budget-tier kit built around a suit whose whole identity is firepower rather than melee flash.
The catch
Color separation is the real weak point. Several spots rely on stickers to fill in trim that should have been molded, and a few builders flag the front compartment stickers as fiddly to seat cleanly. The accessory loadout is genuinely light for a Gundam kit, this suit does not carry a beam saber or a spare hand of swappable weapons, its whole kit is built into the frame, so if you want a shelf full of extra parts to pose with, that is not what you are buying here. The shoulder armor is also bulky enough that it caps how far the arms can rotate before the frame hits it.
Who it's for
Grab this if you are building the Gundam Wing five, or you specifically want the gatling-gun gimmick suit that plays differently from every beam-saber protagonist unit on your shelf. It is also a fine low-pressure build for someone newer to the hobby since there is nothing structurally tricky here, just clip, some stickers, done. Skip it if color-accurate-out-of-the-box matters a lot to you, or if you want a kit loaded with swappable hands and weapons to fuss over, since Heavyarms simply is not built that way. Diehard completionists aside, this is a suit-specific pickup rather than a must-own on its own merits.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
This is a straightforward, no-drama build. Parts are simple to remove and clean up, there is no inner frame to wrangle, and most of the runners are dedicated to the gimmick panels rather than fine detail work. The stickers concentrate around the front torso compartment, and getting them to sit flush there is the one spot where I slowed down.
The engineering payoff is in the waist and hip assembly, which lets the thighs swing forward, back, and rotate independently, giving you a wider stance than you would expect from a kit at this price. Double-jointed elbows and knees back that up. The tradeoff is the weapon loadout: the gatling gun, missile bays, and heavy machine gun are effectively the whole arsenal, there is no beam saber or interchangeable hand set to round things out.
Lore & trivia
- 01Heavyarms is piloted by Trowa Barton in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, though the character using that name took it from the real Trowa Barton after witnessing his death, one of the more unusual pilot backstories in the franchise.
- 02The suit's design philosophy is built entirely around ranged firepower rather than melee, which is why it carries no beam saber, a rarity among the show's five main Gundams.
- 03This HGAC release (kit number 236) came out in October 2020 as part of Bandai's push to re-release the Gundam Wing cast in the upgraded HGAC engineering line that started with Sandrock.
- 04In the story, Trowa attempts to self-destruct Heavyarms rather than let it be studied by OZ, and is only stopped when Catherine Bloom talks him back from it, a pivotal emotional beat for the character.
