This is a genuinely satisfying HG once you get past the sticker sheet.
Bandai retooled the head, chest, shoulders, shield, and joints for the movie continuity rather than just reboxing the old Perfect Pack, and that retooling shows in how clean the silhouette reads on the shelf. It is not a kit for someone who wants a fast weeknight build, and it is not cheap or easy to find outside Gundam Base channels, but as a display piece for the final movie loadout it earns its price.
Best for: Reconguista in G fans who already have a base G-Self and want the definitive final-battle loadout on the shelf
What it is
This is the Gundam Base exclusive version of the G-Self's ultimate backpack, the one it wears through the climactic stretch of the Reconguista in G movies. Bandai didn't just recolor the older Perfect Pack kit, they retooled the head, chest, shoulders, shield, and several joints specifically for this release, and building it you can feel the difference in how the shoulders and torso sit compared to the earlier TV version. The Action Base 7 in the box is a nice touch since this kit is heavy in the back and wants a stand. Once assembled, the pack folds between a bulky space mode and a slimmer atmospheric mode, plus a reflector mode with translucent effect parts, and swapping between them is the most fun part of owning this kit.
The catch
The stickers are the real friction point. There are small accent-color stickers you have to apply as you go rather than all at once at the end, including pinstripe stickers meant for the shield's translucent plastic, and getting those straight is fiddly even with a hobby knife and steady hands. This is also a Gundam Base limited release, so it was never in general retail circulation and now mostly turns up through resale or import shops at a premium over a standard HG price. Waist rotation and thigh swing are noticeably limited by the armor panels once the Perfect Pack is on, so some Reconguista poses just aren't happening.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already love the G-Self and want the movie's final-battle look sitting next to your TV-version kit, or if the reflector mode effect parts and transforming backpack sound like your kind of fun. Skip it if you want a cheap, easy weeknight build, if you're allergic to sticker work, or if you don't already have a base G-Self kit to attach it to since this is an add-on pack built around that chassis. Track down a fair-priced copy before paying serious import markup for what is still, at heart, an HG-tier backpack accessory.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The core build is straightforward HG snap-fit, but it is not a kit you rip through in an evening because of how many small sticker-and-part steps are interleaved with the backpack assembly. Gate placement on the retooled parts is clean and cleanup is minimal, but the translucent effect pieces need care since scratches show more on clear plastic than on solid color.
Where this kit earns its keep is the transformation gimmick: the Perfect Pack folds down for atmospheric flight, opens back up for space combat mode, and can mount the glow-under-UV reflector effect parts for the movie's signature energy attacks. Molded color separation on the retooled head and chest is good enough that the accent stickers feel like a finishing touch rather than a crutch, even if applying them is the most tedious part of the build.
Lore & trivia
- 01This release marked the 10th anniversary of Gundam Reconguista in G and was sold exclusively through THE GUNDAM BASE stores starting October 26, 2024.
- 02The YG-111 G-Self is piloted primarily by Bellri Zenam, a Capital Guard cadet who captures the suit from space pirate Aida Rayhunton in the story's opening.
- 03The G-Self is built around a full-body Photon Frame derived from the ancient Rose of Hermes blueprints, and only three people (linked by the Rayhunton Code) can pilot it: Bellri, Aida Surugan, and Raraiya Akuparl.
- 04This kit depicts the Perfect Pack loadout the G-Self wears during the climactic Guiana Highlands battle in the Reconguista in G movie compilation, distinct from the TV-series version of the same backpack.
