The verdict

This is a genuinely clever P-Bandai twin pack that gets more mileage out of one release than almost any other Zaku set on the market.

You get two distinct Red Wolf pilots, Chubs with his spiked shoulder armor and Kale with his precision long rifle loadout, from a single box, and Bandai threw in a bonus parts sprue to convert an existing Solari Zaku into the unidentified type seen in the show. It is not a kit for people who want one hero unit to pose dramatically. It is a kit for people who want a squad.

Best for: Requiem for Vengeance fans and Zaku collectors who already want a Red Wolf Corps lineup and don't mind painting a few small areas by hand

The full review

What it is

What you are actually buying here is two complete HG 1/144 Zaku II F Types built on the same solid frame that Bandai has been refining across the whole RFV Zaku line, plus a small bonus sprue of parts that lets you convert a separately sold Zaku II F Type Solari kit into the mystery unidentified-type Zaku from the show. Chubs gets those angular spike shoulder pads that make him instantly readable on a shelf, Kale gets a long rifle and a leaner optics-focused silhouette, and both come with the Red Wolf Corps water-slide decals for unit markings and numbering. Building two Zakus back to back in one sitting has a rhythm to it I actually enjoyed.

The catch

The honest catch is that neither figure is complete straight off the runners. Bandai's own instructions call for hand painting on both units, the head and waist on Chubs, the hand parts, legs, and long rifle on Kale, so if you are strictly a snap-and-display builder you will end up with visible unpainted gaps unless you break out a brush. This was also a Bandai Hobby Online Shop limited release at 5,500 yen, so secondary market pricing runs well above a standard single HG, and the bonus Solari conversion parts are genuinely a bonus, not a full kit, meaning you need to already own or separately buy the Zaku II F Type Solari for that third piece to mean anything.

Who it's for

If you watched Requiem for Vengeance and want the Red Wolf Corps sitting together on a shelf, this is close to essential, and the value math works out well precisely because you are getting two mobile suits worth of parts and a conversion option in one purchase. Skip it if you want a single centerpiece build straight out of the box with zero paint required, or if you have no interest in the Solari variant and don't want to hunt down the separate kit those bonus parts depend on. Newer builders should also know going in that the paint callouts are not optional for an accurate finish.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

This kit shares its frame with the rest of Bandai's HG Requiem for Vengeance Zaku line, which builders have generally described as tight and well-molded with dense surface detail for an HG, sometimes called the most square-jawed Zaku silhouette Bandai has done. The mono-eye rib slides for easy positioning, and the heat hawk and machine gun both mount to the backpack via joint parts so neither unit needs to hold a weapon in every pose. Assembly across both figures took an evening each, unhurried, with gate placement clean enough that cleanup wasn't a chore.

Where this set earns its keep is the loadout variety. Chubs carries the machine gun and heat hawk with those distinctive spiked shoulder pads, Kale gets a dedicated long rifle for a longer-range silhouette, and both share interchangeable hands and an action base adapter so you can pose them mid-charge rather than standing at parade rest. Leg pipe articulation on this frame is functional but a touch stiff on some copies, so don't expect a full squat, and one builder flagged a right arm joint worth checking carefully on rotation before you commit to a pose.

Lore & trivia

  • 01Chubs and Kale are members of the Red Wolf Corps, a Zeon strike team featured in Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, the CG anime series produced for Netflix.
  • 02The set's bonus parts convert a separately sold Zaku II F Type Solari kit into the unidentified-type Zaku that appears in the show, rather than shipping as a standalone third figure.
  • 03This was a Bandai Hobby Online Shop limited release priced at 5,500 yen, with a February 2025 online shop launch window.
