This is one of the better HGCE releases to come out of SEED Freedom, and it earns that mostly through engineering, not part count.
Bandai built the SEED Action System into the frame this time instead of bolting old HG Duel joints onto a new shell, and it shows the moment you start posing it. The Assault Shroud swap is the real selling point here. Take it off and you get a leaner, more mobile Duel underneath, put it back on and you get the bulked-up Blitz silhouette with the Gleipnir and lancer dart. That's two kits worth of posing options in one box, and it mostly delivers.
Best for: HG builders who want a transforming-loadout Gundam without stepping up to MG money
What it is
The Duel Blitz is Yzak Joule's mobile suit from SEED Freedom, a nuclear-upgraded GAT-X102 Duel Gundam wearing a Blitz-derived Assault Shroud armor package, and the HGCE kit gives you both configurations in the same box. Building it, the plastic quality is a step up from a typical budget HG. Clean surface texture, good mold sharpness on the shroud panels, and a shoulder mount for the Gleipnir cannon that actually locks in place instead of just resting there. Swapping between bare Duel and armored Blitz mode takes a few minutes and doesn't feel like a compromise either way, which is the part that impressed me most.
The catch
Put the Assault Shroud on and the trade-off shows up immediately: the big shoulder and waist armor pieces block a chunk of the upper body articulation that the bare frame has. You get a great range of motion in Duel mode and a noticeably stiffer, more restricted range once the shroud goes on, so pick your display pose before you commit. Nub placement is mostly fine but a few marks land on the feet and the sides of the shoulder armor where sanding shows. Decals are limited mostly to the orange accent lines and the Gleipnir markings, so color separation depends on molded plastic rather than stickers, which is good news if your gate cuts are clean and less forgiving if they aren't.
Who it's for
If you want an HG that rewards actually building both its configurations rather than picking one and shelving the parts, this is a strong pull. SEED fans who never got a proper Duel Blitz and don't want to chase down an MG Assault Shroud kit get a legitimate stand-in here for HG money. Skip it if articulated action poses in full armor mode matter more to you than the shroud silhouette, since that's where the kit gives the most ground. Beginners will be fine with it, the sticker load is light and the frame doesn't ask for anything exotic.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Gate placement is mostly considerate for an HG at this price, plastic feels denser than Bandai's cheapest lines, and panel lines are pre-etched cleanly enough that a wash isn't strictly necessary. The shroud pieces clip on with real friction rather than loose pegs, so the transformation gimmick doesn't feel like an afterthought bolted onto the sprue layout.
The head's ball-and-hinge joint, double-jointed elbows and knees, and the sliding hip mount from the SEED Action System give the bare Duel frame genuinely dynamic range, closer to what you'd expect from a step up in grade. Add the shoulder-swing joints and the frontward torso tilt and this is one of the more expressive HG frames in the current SEED Freedom wave, at least until the shroud goes on and locks a lot of that down.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Duel Blitz is a secretly upgraded GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, recovered and modified by ZAFT after the First Alliance-PLANT War and hidden at Boaz alongside the Lightning Buster Gundam until Yzak Joule needed it in C.E. 75.
- 02Its cockpit was swapped to a ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior-type unit as part of the covert refit overseen by Yuri Amalfi under orders from Eileen Canaver and Ezalia Joule.
- 03The Assault Shroud armor carries weaponry styled after the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, which is where the Duel Blitz gets both its armor design and its name.
- 04In the film, the Duel Blitz used its lancer darts to destroy the bridge of Hari Jagannath's coup flagship, stopping it from crashing into the Millennium.
