The verdict

This is one of the better HG kits Bandai has put out in the SEED Freedom wave, and I mean that as more than a passing compliment.

The redesigned Volantes backpack, the metallic gloss frame, and the SEED Action System joints all point the same direction: this suit is meant to be posed, not just displayed standing still. It costs a little more than a typical HG and reuses two effect runners from the original Infinite Justice, but everything else feels genuinely new.

Best for: SEED fans who want an Athrun kit that can actually hold a full-extension beam saber pose

The full review

What it is

This kit is the Type II refresh of Athrun Zala's Infinite Justice, the version he pilots in the SEED Freedom film, and it shows in almost every part of the build. The frame is molded in a real metallic silver gloss instead of the flat gray of the original HGCE release, so the inner structure has presence even before you get the armor on. The new X-wing Volantes backpack splits into four wings that each swing independently, and Bandai gave it a hidden Spitze Schwert beam horn tucked into the head, which is a small touch I did not expect from an HG. Snapping the shoulders and hips together, I could feel the SEED Action System doing its job, the joints lock with real tension instead of the loose click you get on cheaper HG lines.

The catch

The price sits above the standard HG range because of the part count and the extra gimmick runners, so go in knowing this is not a budget pickup. Two of the beam effect runners are carried over straight from the original HGCE Infinite Justice rather than redesigned, which is a minor letdown if you already own that kit and were hoping for something entirely fresh. Builders have also flagged that the clear beam saber blades are softer and more bendable than usual, which makes them a little finicky to seat cleanly in the hand before they hold their position. Color separation still leans on a small sticker sheet for some of the finer trim, so you are clipping and applying, not just clipping.

Who it's for

If you followed Athrun through SEED and SEED Destiny and want his most current mobile suit without stepping up to MG money, this is the kit to get. It also works well as a first HG for someone who wants more articulation payoff than a basic entry kit, since the waist and knee joints genuinely reward posing effort. Skip it if you already have the original HGCE Infinite Justice and are only after Type II for the backpack, since two of the effect parts are identical, or if sticker-based color separation is a dealbreaker for you. For most SEED fans building a shelf, though, I would put this near the top of the HG lineup this wave.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Nub placement is considerate and the plastic quality is a step up from a typical HG, so cleanup is quick and the parts snap together with confidence rather than looseness. The small decal sheet handles fine trim color separation, and while I would have preferred more molded color, the application is straightforward and not something you need setting solution for.

The engineering standout is the Volantes backpack and its four independently swinging wings, paired with the concealed Spitze Schwert beam horn in the head, a gimmick I have not seen pulled off this well at this price point. The rotating knee joints are a genuine articulation upgrade over the original Infinite Justice HG, letting the legs pivot slightly side to side instead of just bending front to back, which matters a lot when you are trying to lock in a dynamic beam saber stance.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Infinite Justice Gundam Type II is Athrun Zala's mobile suit in the 2024 theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, an upgrade of the original Infinite Justice from SEED Destiny.
  • 02In the film, Athrun pilots the Type II to defeat the Black Knights ace pilot Shura, saving Kira in the process before reuniting with Cagalli on Earth.
  • 03The Type II's frame uses genuine metallic gloss injection plastic rather than a painted or flat-gray finish, a material choice Bandai reserved for the kit's silver inner structure.
  • 04The kit's Spitze Schwert beam horn is a concealed weapon mounted at the top of the head, a detail exclusive to the Type II version and absent from the original Infinite Justice.
