This is the Full Armor ZZ done right, and I mean that as someone who was skeptical any kit could make this much armor plating look elegant instead of stacked.
Katoki's redesign trims the silhouette without losing the sheer mass that defines the suit, and the fact that you get a second, cleaner Enhanced ZZ Gundam display option by pulling the armor off is a genuinely great use of one box. It is a demanding build and a premium price, but nothing about it feels like padding.
Best for: MG collectors who already love Ver.Ka engineering and want a two-in-one ZZ Gundam display
What it is
The Full Armor ZZ is Anaheim Electronics' answer to the base ZZ Gundam's structural weak points, an add-on armor shell with its own thrusters, missiles, and a high mega cannon, and this Ver.Ka kit treats that concept as a design problem worth solving properly. Katoki's sharper panel lines and tighter proportions keep the extra bulk from reading as clutter, which is the single biggest risk with any Full Armor variant. Popping the plating off to reveal the Enhanced ZZ Gundam underneath is the moment the kit sells itself. I went in expecting a chore and came out impressed at how deliberate the whole shell feels.
The catch
This is premium MG territory at roughly 12,540 yen, and 44 runners of Katoki-level part separation means a build session, not a quick afternoon. Builders coming from the base MG ZZ Ver.Ka should expect the added armor to change how some joints behave, the kit compensates with a roll mechanism in the forearms and an interlocking wrist so raising the arms horizontally does not jam the shoulder plating, but that compensation is itself evidence of how tight the engineering has to be to make this suit work at all. If you want a quick weeknight build, this is not it.
Who it's for
If you already own the base MG ZZ Ver.Ka and like the design language, this is close to a must-have upgrade since the dual-mode swap effectively doubles your display options from one purchase. If you are newer to Master Grades, this is a legitimately challenging first Ver.Ka, the part count and the armor-transformation logic ask more of you than a standard MG, but builders who stick with it report it is worth the extra care. Anyone who just wants the definitive 1/100 Full Armor ZZ Gundam, full stop, will not find a better version of this suit right now.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Expect a long build measured in sessions rather than one sitting, 44 runners worth of Katoki-level detail means careful gate placement and a lot of small armor segments to track before they stack into the final silhouette. The transformation logic between Full Armor and Enhanced ZZ modes is the trickiest part conceptually, since you are not just adding parts, you are reorganizing them, so it pays to dry-fit before committing to final assembly order.
The engineering payoff is real: the forearm roll mechanism lets the arms move in step with the added shoulder and forearm armor so raising them horizontally does not bind, the wrists use an interlocking design that stays functional under the extra plating, and the front skirt armor is built to expand upward when the legs lift so high kicks and dynamic poses do not get blocked by the suit's own bulk. The Hyper Mega Cannon adds its own articulation with a deployable handheld grip, so even the signature weapon is not just a static accessory.
Lore & trivia
- 01The Full Armor ZZ Gundam was conceived as Anaheim Electronics' fix for the base MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam's structurally weak transformation mechanism, adding an armor shell with anti-beam coating rated to withstand roughly 3 seconds of direct beam fire.
- 02The added armor package included its own sensors, propellant tanks, thrusters, missiles, and a high mega cannon for extra firepower, all removable so the suit could revert to its Enhanced ZZ Gundam base form.
- 03This Ver.Ka release is fully supervised by mechanical designer Hajime Katoki, whose redesign work is aimed at making the Full Armor's proportions read as deliberate rather than simply stacked with extra plating.
