The verdict

I like this kit more than I expected to going in.

It is a Premium Bandai reissue of the ESF-type GN-XIII tooling in A-Laws crimson, and that lineage shows, this is a frame with roots going back to the original MG GN-X, but the articulation and the GN Lance gimmick still hold up. It will not out-engineer a modern MG, and it leans on stickers more than I would like, but as a display of the show's disposable mook suit done properly, it works.

Best for: Gundam 00 fans who want the A-Laws grunt suit done right, and builders okay with sticker work in exchange for good poseability

The full review

What it is

This is the A-Laws recolor of Bandai's GN-XIII tooling, the mainstay mass production suit that fills out the background (and plenty of foreground) fights in Gundam 00 season 2. Getting it in 1/100 with an actual inner structure instead of the simplified HG frame is the appeal here. Assembly moves fast because the part count sits in normal MG territory rather than flagship-kit bloat, and the crimson and dark grey molded plastic reads as A-Laws the moment the torso and legs go together, no guessing at the color scheme. The GN Lance clicking into both its melee and rifle configurations is a small moment that made me grin, it is a simple swap but it nails the suit's signature weapon.

The catch

The frame underneath this kit traces back to the original MG GN-X line, and it shows in spots, some of the joint covers feel like older-generation Bandai engineering rather than anything from the last few years. Bigger issue is the sticker reliance for panel color and sensor detail, several builders have flagged this specifically on the GN-XIII family, and skipping the stickers leaves visible gaps in the color separation. This was also a Premium Bandai exclusive, so secondhand pricing runs higher than a standard retail MG and it is not something you will find sitting on a shelf at a hobby shop.

Who it's for

Buy this if you are building out the Gundam 00 A-Laws roster and want the grunt suit in a scale that lets you actually pose it, ball-jointed neck, double elbows, and a rotating waist give it real range for a mass production unit. Skip it if you want cutting edge MG engineering or you are not willing to hunt down secondhand stock at Premium Bandai prices. If sticker application is a dealbreaker for you, budget time for panel lining and marker work over the stock decals, or plan to paint it, several builders treat this one as a great painting project specifically because the stock color separation needs the help.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Assembly is a normal-length MG build, nothing bloated, and the parts fit together without the looseness some older Bandai kits are known for. Gate placement is standard for the era, expect some visible nub marks on the crimson armor panels that will need cleanup with a sharp side cutter and a bit of sanding if you want them invisible.

The standout is the articulation for a mook suit, the ball-and-socket neck, forward and backward shoulder swing, double-jointed elbows, and full waist rotation add up to real dynamic poses, not just the stiff stance you'd expect from a background mobile suit. The GN Lance melee-to-rifle conversion is the accessory highlight, and the GN Claws and beam saber loadout round it out reasonably well for the price point of a mainline MG.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The GN-XIII, nicknamed 'Jinx Three' by fans, is the direct successor to the GNX-607T GN-XII and shares its basic body structure with further miniaturized GN particle generators.
  • 02A-Laws and standard Earth Sphere Federation Army units of the GN-XIII are distinguished by color, A-Laws forces are painted crimson while ESF Army units run blue.
  • 03The suit's primary weapon, the GN Lance, was a design change from its predecessors' GN Beam Rifle, giving it dual melee and long range beam capability in one weapon.
  • 04This MG A-Laws Type was released in 2018 as a Premium Bandai online shop exclusive, sharing tooling with the earlier MG GN-XIII ESF Type.
