This is the same rock solid MG Zaku II High Mobility Type 2.0 engineering everyone already loves, just poured into a colorway most builders never got to touch.
I like it a lot for what it is, a shopping-exclusive reskin rather than a new sculpt, so the ceiling on my score is set by the base kit's own quirks (namely that stubborn waist). If you already have a Char's Zaku or a Black Tri-Stars build on your shelf, this is the one that makes the trio (or the outlier) actually pop from across the room.
Best for: MSV-R fans and Zaku II collectors who want a genuinely different High Mobility Type colorway rather than another red or green repaint
What it is
Underneath the bright blue plastic this is the MG Zaku II High Mobility Type Ver 2.0 frame, and that frame is one of Bandai's better mid-2000s to early-2010s MG efforts. Uma Lightning was a Chimera Corps pilot in Mobile Suit Gundam MSV-R: The Return of Johnny Ridden, nicknamed Blue Lightning for exactly the color this kit gives you in molded plastic instead of paint. The mono-eye tracks when you turn the head, the shoulder armor swings out of the way of the arms, and the whole package builds up into a Zaku that actually looks like it is leaning into a dogfight rather than standing at attention. Getting a niche MSV pilot's personal unit in this quality of plastic, with water-transfer decals doing the insignia work, feels like a genuine treat rather than a cash grab reskin.
The catch
The waist only rotates about 45 degrees because the movement pipe assembly eats up the rotation space, and that is a real limitation on a kit this posable everywhere else, it is the one joint that will make you sigh mid-pose. This was a Bandai Hobby Online Shop and Premium Bandai exclusive rather than a retail-shelf release, so pricing runs well above a standard MG and secondhand or reissue availability is the main way in now. The tube detailing on the head, waist, and legs also takes real patience to clean up seam by seam if you want a contest-clean build, this is not a fifteen-minute snap together.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already appreciate the MG Zaku II 2.0 sculpt and specifically want the Uma Lightning blue rather than yet another red variant, or if MSV-R and the Chimera Corps side stories are your corner of Gundam lore. Skip it if you are hunting for your first MG or want the cheapest way into a High Mobility Type Zaku, the standard Ver 2.0 releases and even the RG Uma Lightning give you similar character energy for less money and less hunting. This one rewards people who already know what they are getting into with the base frame and just want the color nobody else has.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The runners will feel familiar if you have built any Ver 2.0 Zaku before, this is the same reliable frame just recolored, and that is a compliment. Part fit is snug without being a fight, the double-jointed elbows go together cleanly, and the parts that get the most handling during posing (shoulders, hips) feel like they were engineered by someone who actually poses their kits afterward. The tube details around the head and waist are the one spot where I slowed down, they are small and there are a lot of them, so budget real time if you want clean nub removal rather than rushing through.
Where this kit earns its keep is articulation and color separation working together. The shoulder shields and skirt armor are jointed specifically so they get out of the way of arm and leg movement, which is the kind of detail that separates a merely posable MG from one that actually holds a dynamic pose. Molded blue plastic across the body means the personal color scheme survives shelf life and handling in a way paint never fully does, and the water transfer decals carry the unit markings without needing an airbrush. For a suit built around a rifle and the standard Zaku accessory loadout, the presentation payoff on the finished figure is well above what the modest accessory count would suggest on paper.
Lore & trivia
- 01Uma Lightning is a pilot from the manga Mobile Suit Gundam MSV-R: The Return of Johnny Ridden, part of the elite Zeon unit known as the Chimera Corps.
- 02Lightning's nickname, Blue Lightning, comes directly from this mobile suit's bright blue personal color scheme.
- 03The in-universe MS-06R-1A High Mobility Type was an upgrade of the MS-06R-1 that swapped external propellant tanks for an interchangeable fuel cartridge system to speed up combat refueling, and its cost and handling complexity limited real production to just 56 units.
- 04This MG release was a Bandai Hobby Online Shop exclusive that reuses the acclaimed MG Zaku II High Mobility Type Ver 2.0 frame, the same engineering base behind the Black Tri-Stars and Johnny Ridden custom releases.
