This is the Sinanju Stein done right a second time, and I'd put it ahead of most of Bandai's other Ver.Ka reissues from the last few years.
Kimoto's silhouette work carries the whole kit, the axe-into-naginata gimmick is genuinely satisfying to fold together, and it poses like it means it. It is not flawless, the vents are a real miss, but nothing here soured the build for me.
Best for: UC fans who already love the original Sinanju line and want the meaner, more mechanically ambitious Narrative variant with Zoltan's rage baked into the sculpt
What it is
I went in expecting a straight recolor of the older Stein kit and got something with real new engineering under the hood. The Emotion Manipulator SP hands let each finger move on its own, which sounds like a gimmick until you're actually wrapping the fingers around the beam naginata's grip and realize how much better it reads than a fixed fist. The cockpit opens, the chest block has a vertical float to it, and the Beam Axe locks together into a long naginata that then plugs into the shield for a deployed beam effect. Two 1/100 Zoltan Akkanen figures ride along too, one standing, one seated, which is a nice touch for anyone building a display base around the pilot.
The catch
The vents are the one thing I'd flag before anyone buys this. Most of the armor's vent detailing on the skirts and shoulders is molded in rather than color separated, so you're either leaving them the base color or picking up a paint pen if you want that layered look the rest of the kit has. Builders also note the side skirts can run a little loose depending on how careful you are with the joint tension during assembly. At $80 to $85 US it's priced like the full-detail MG it is, so this isn't an impulse buy, it's a kit you commit to.
Who it's for
If you've built the standard Sinanju before and wondered whether the Stein variant is worth doubling up on, it is, especially in this Ver.Ka pass with the improved hands and the naginata gimmick. It's also a strong pick if Gundam Narrative is your era and you want Zoltan's unit specifically rather than a generic UC repaint. I'd steer newer builders toward a plainer MG first though. The part count and the small hinged mechanisms in the knees and vents reward someone who already has a few MGs under their belt and won't get frustrated by fiddly sub-assemblies.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself moves at a normal MG pace, nothing here is unusually fiddly to clip or clean, and the frame goes together the way you'd expect from a modern Bandai runner layout. Where it gets interesting is the hand assembly. Getting each finger's tiny joint seated correctly takes patience, but once they're in, you can actually curl the fingers around a grip instead of relying on a swap-in fist, and that's a small thing that changes how every weapon pose looks.
The engineering standouts are the chest block's vertical float for the cockpit-open pose and the knee assembly, which splits and exposes internal detail as it bends rather than just hinging flat. Weapon loadout includes the beam axe, the beam naginata combined mode, a shield with a deployable beam effect part, and the two Zoltan Akkanen figures for a display vignette. For the price, you're getting a lot of moving mechanism, just not full vent color separation to match.
Lore & trivia
- 01The MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein is piloted by Zoltan Akkanen, a Cyber Newtype from the same project that produced Full Frontal, engineered as a second Char Aznable but regarded as a failure, a fact that fuels his instability in Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative.
- 02This Narrative Ver.Ka release carries the cuff and chest ornamentation associated with the Sleeves, the Neo Zeon remnant faction, applied specifically to Zoltan's personal unit.
- 03The kit's Beam Axe can be joined into a single long Beam Naginata and mounted to the shield, where a separate beam effect part can be attached and deployed for combined-weapon poses.
- 04It launched in Japan on June 29, 2024 at a retail price around 8,800 yen, landing in the US at roughly $80 to $85.
