I like this kit for what it is, an honest, no-drama build of the suit that keeps the Earth Federation's lines running in Unicorn, but I would not call it thrilling.
Bandai gave the D Type real love with new tooling on the head, backpack, shoulders, waist, and leg thruster covers, and the molded light green is genuinely nice out of the box. What it does not do is fix the Jegan family's core issue, which is armor that boxes in the frame and caps how far you can push a pose.
Best for: UC completionists and Jegan-family fans who want the definitive Unicorn-era version, not action-figure articulation
What it is
This is the field-upgraded Jegan that Federation regulars actually flew during the events of Gundam Unicorn, and Bandai treated the D Type as more than a repaint job. The head, vulcan pods, backpack, shoulder armor, waist and front armor, and leg thruster covers are all new molds over the base MG Jegan, and the suit's signature light green comes molded in plastic rather than relying on paint or stickers for the big panels. Assembly moves fast. There is no complicated inner frame gimmick here, just a straightforward MG skeleton wrapped in armor, so it goes together in an afternoon rather than a weekend project. I came away liking the shape more than I expected once the shoulders and backpack were on.
The catch
The Jegan frame's feet have limited pose-ability, and the ankle and foot articulation lags behind other MGs from the same era, so deep lunges and dynamic action poses fight you more than they should. The loadout is stock standard, a beam rifle, shield, and beam saber, nothing that makes you go dig for a display shelf spotlight. This is also a P-Bandai exclusive kit, which means it comes and goes in limited release windows and usually costs more than a mainline retail MG for a comparable part count. One builder I found flat out called the base Jegan silhouette unflattering before painting, and while the D Type's new panels help, the bulky armor blocks are still the design's weak point.
Who it's for
Grab this if you are building out the Unicorn timeline and want the Federation's actual frontline suit done right, or if you already like the Jegan shape and want the best-detailed version of it Bandai has made. Skip it if you want a kit that rewards aggressive posing or comes loaded with swappable parts and extra weapons, because this is a quieter, more workmanlike build. I'd also point first-time MG builders here specifically because the simple frame makes a forgiving, quick first build before tackling something with a full inner skeleton.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build is genuinely quick. There is no complex inner frame gimmick to fight through, so if you are going straight out of box, expect an afternoon rather than a multi-day project. Gate placement is typical MG-era Bandai, nothing that demands unusual cleanup, and the new D Type panels (backpack, shoulders, waist, leg thruster covers) clip on cleanly over the shared Jegan skeleton.
The standout here is the color molding. The light green that defines the D Type comes in the plastic itself, so big panels look correct without painting, and the sticker sheet lets you assign your own unit numbering for personalization. Articulation is fair through the arms and torso but the feet are the weak link, limiting how far you can push a stance compared to suits with more sophisticated ankle joints.
Lore & trivia
- 01The RGM-89D Jegan D Type is a battlefield-refined variant of the original RGM-89 Jegan, built to mount extra equipment via added latches on the shoulder armor and waist front.
- 02The D Type first saw use during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, set in UC 0096, several years after the original Jegan debuted in Char's Counterattack.
- 03The specialized RGM-89De ECOAS Type, used by the Earth Federation's special operations unit, is built on the D Type's chassis but adds a dedicated visor and extra chest armor, making it a distinct kit from this standard D Type release.
- 04This MG release included new molds specifically for the D Type's head, vulcan pod system, backpack, shoulder armor, and waist parts rather than reusing the original MG Jegan's tooling wholesale.
