The verdict

This is the Re-GZ finally built like Bandai believed in it.

The original MG Re-GZ from years earlier felt like a placeholder next to Zeta-line kits, but the Custom reworks the head, chest, shoulders, waist and legs with new molds, and the difference in confidence is obvious the second you have it in hand. I came away impressed with how much of the Zeta Gundam engineering language got folded into a suit most people only remember as a background unit in Char's Counterattack.

Best for: UC completionists and Zeta-line fans who want the full-transformation mass production suit done right

The full review

What it is

The Re-GZ Custom is a P-Bandai exclusive reissue of the mass production Zeta-derivative Federation forces used late in the One Year War timeline's aftermath, and this MG treats it as a proper sibling to the Zeta Gundam kit rather than a reskinned afterthought. New parts across the head, chest, shoulders, and legs give it a sharper Gundam-type face with a proper V-fin, cleaner duct separation on the chest and shoulders, and Zeta-style forearms with a working grenade launcher that slides open. It also does the full Waverider transformation with the Back Weapon System attached, which is the party trick most people buy this kit for. Handling it, the whole thing feels like Bandai went back and gave this suit the respect the anime never did.

The catch

It is still a P-Bandai exclusive, which means it comes and goes from availability and usually costs more than a comparable retail MG. The waverider conversion is fun once you have it dialed in, but getting the Back Weapon System to seat cleanly and stay locked takes patience the first few times, and some panel lines and smaller details lean on water slide decals rather than molded color, so you are looking at extra bench time if you want the finished suit to read as crisp as the box art. It is also, at the end of the day, still a Re-GZ, meaning it will never carry the visual drama of the Zeta or the ZZ.

Who it's for

Buy this if you already have a Zeta Gundam on the shelf and want the unsung mass production cousin standing next to it, or if the Char's Counterattack side of the timeline is your thing and you want more than the background silhouette the movie gave this suit. Skip it if you need bright, obvious paint-scheme drama, or if hunting down secondhand P-Bandai stock at a markup is not something you want to deal with. For most UC fans who care about the Zeta family tree, this is a satisfying, better-than-expected build.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Gate placement follows typical late-2010s MG standards, nothing brutal, but the new shoulder and duct parts have more small pieces than the original Re-GZ did, so budget extra time for cleanup on those runners. Fit is snug rather than loose, which is the tradeoff for the tighter articulation Bandai built in.

The revised shoulder and upper thigh inner frame is the headline engineering change, and it shows in two-handed weapon poses and wide saber swings that the original kit could not comfortably hold. The beam assault rifle and included Action Base 4 adapters round out a loadout that feels appropriate for the price band, and the Zeta-style forearm grenade launcher is a small but genuinely satisfying gimmick to fidget with.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Re-GZ is a Universal Century mass production suit built as a stopgap derivative of the Zeta Gundam, appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (UC 0093).
  • 02In the film, Federation officer Chan Agi uses a damaged Re-GZ to protect a defenseless Hathaway Noa, only to be killed when Hathaway fires on the unarmed suit.
  • 03The RGZ-91B Custom variant this kit represents adds Zeta Gundam-style wing binders and heavier armament on top of the base Re-GZ, and unlike the original Re-GZ, it is fully transformable into Waverider mode.
