The verdict

I like this a lot more than I expected to for something that is not, on its own, a mobile suit kit.

It is an expansion set for the MG Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka, built around a battleship-interior stand that racks up every gun the suit carries. On its own terms, as a display accessory, it earns its price. As anyone's first or only kit, it makes no sense at all.

Best for: Owners of the MG Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka who want the full arsenal displayed instead of buried in a parts box

The full review

What it is

This is not the Full Armor Gundam itself. It is the companion accessory set (a Bandai Hobby Online Shop / Premium Bandai release) built to sit next to that kit and give its huge weapon loadout somewhere to live. You get a new Beam Rifle and a new Hyper Bazooka, each with its own docking gimmick so two Beam Rifles combine into a double-barreled rifle and two Hyper Bazookas combine into a double bazooka, plus the hanger structure itself, styled like the inside of a Federation battleship, with a rack to prop up armor plates and weapons in display poses. The center base doubles as an Action Base pedestal, so it is not purely decorative filler.

The catch

The obvious catch is that this does nothing without the base Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka kit, which is sold separately and is itself a substantial, pricier build. It was a limited Premium Bandai item, so secondhand prices run well above a typical accessory set and availability is inconsistent. The first production run also shipped with a packaging typo ("Hunger" instead of "Hanger"), which collectors treat as a minor curiosity rather than a build issue. There is no mobile suit frame here, no articulation to speak of on the hanger itself, and if you already own enough Action Bases you may find the pedestal function redundant.

Who it's for

This is a purchase for people who already own or are committed to buying the MG Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka and want its full weapon set (the combinable rifles and bazookas) displayed properly instead of clipped onto the suit's back or loose on a shelf. If you are new to Gunpla, skip this entirely, it is a display accessory for an advanced, expensive kit, not a starting point. If you just want a nice base for a Gundam, a standard Action Base is cheaper and more flexible. But for Thunderbolt fans building out Io Fleming's Full Armor Gundam as a diorama piece, this hanger is the accessory that was clearly designed with real care for that specific display goal.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Because this is a hanger and weapon expansion rather than a mobile suit, there is no inner frame to assemble and no articulation puzzle to solve. The build is mostly structural: assembling the rack, the support arms, and the base, then clipping the new Beam Rifle and Hyper Bazooka together. Gate placement on Bandai's mid-2010s MG runners was generally clean by this point, and builders shopping this set are typically already experienced enough with the base Full Armor Gundam kit that this is a straightforward, low-stress side build in comparison.

The standout engineering here is the docking gimmick on the new weapons: two Beam Rifles lock together into a genuinely different-looking double rifle, and two Hyper Bazookas combine the same way, both firsts for this particular Gundam's weapon lineup according to Bandai's own product notes. The hanger structure is sized and posed specifically for the Full Armor Gundam's armor plates and guns, which is the kind of considered display engineering you do not get from a generic Action Base, and the pedestal doubling as a working display base adds real usability beyond just looking good on a shelf.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The FA-78 Full Armor Gundam (Thunderbolt Ver.) is piloted by Io Fleming of the Moore Brotherhood in Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, a manga and anime set during the One Year War.
  • 02This accessory set was a Bandai Hobby Online Shop / Premium Bandai exclusive released in November 2016, sold separately from the base MG Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka kit.
  • 03The included Beam Rifle and Hyper Bazooka were the first proper reproductions of the Full Armor Gundam's specific weapons in this kit line, and both can combine with a second copy into double-barreled configurations.
  • 04Early production runs of the box printed the word "Hunger" instead of "Hanger", a since-corrected packaging error collectors still bring up.
